IPod thinks its docked when its not

Hi
My iPod thinks that it is docked when I don't have it on a docking station. Then when I do out it on a docking station, the volume slider appears.
Is there anyway I can fix this without seeing a Genius? I have tried resetting, I've tried plugging it in and out and still no success.

It's back to thinking its docked/not docked when docked again. Any ideas how to resolve this?
