I don't know a single person with a modern house who keeps their car in their garage.
Because unless they own a Mini, Bubble car or a motorbike they won't be able to get their car in the 'Garage'!!

It's either used store their junk or it has been converted into an office, gym or dining room.
About all you can do with them!

I live on an estate of semi-detached new-ish builds (late 90s) and there is a car (or two) on every driveway. The garage space in my house was converted into living space by the previous owner and it is one of the main reasons I bought the house as otherwise there wouldn't be anywhere to put a proper dining table.
    BIB says it all really!!

    What are rimlights?

They're like little spotlights that fit in under the rim of the toilet bowl - lots of small lights inside a kind of plastic tube that keeps them waterproof. They're good but if you get the cheap ones they can overheat.

Must admit i'd draw the line at illuminating the inside of my bog which does seem a bit odd!
Your very own Blackpoo illuminations? :D

One of the best ideas i've seen on toilets though is seats with 'dampers' so it's impossible for the seat or cover to go crashing down.

My son went to great lengths to fit some fancy lighting on his stairs. Tiny little strobes at the side of each step which come on automatically as you hit the first step, but he's 'fussy' and wanted them to run on/off sequentially. He couldn't locate the type of controller in this country which would do that and eventually had to import one from a company in Canada.

When watching television, I always make sure that the only light on is fairly low down and behind the set. Preferably, the bulb shouldn't be visible. It really makes a huge difference to the picture.

Brand new apartment as of October 2013, standard fittings:
pendants in each room except for LED downlighters in kitchen and bathroom.

I'm an Electrician so all the upgrades I've done myself. Almost every light in my apartment is now LED.

    hallway LED fittings x2:
    each fitting has 2x 2watt LED's + little blue LED's (total 10-15 watts?)

bedroom LED fitting (total 16 watts?)
    3x 4.5watt LED's + little blue LED's

    living room ceiling lights x2
    50watts each (10w x4 halogen + 10w LED's)

added lights into my balcony decking, switched via iPhone app:

2x LED wall shelves on opposite wall
    LED strip under the sofa
small LED strip at side of computer

I am very fussy about how lighting looks.

We have ceiling pendants in all rooms apart from the kitchen and bathroom but never use them. I cant remember the last time one of the 'main lights' was turned on.

We have lamps everywhere and when I get home from work I tend to go round turning on all the lamps so that when it starts to get dark, the house is already cosy. In winter, the hall lamps are on all day so that when I come in, I dont have to turn on the main light when I come in.

With regard to modern housing, I dont like modern houses because they do everything 'open plan' I cannot stand 'lounge diners', I like a kitchen diner. They are normally on new estates where you cant park anywhere and cars clutter up the roads by parking on the pavements.

However, I take issue with the size issue, we are currently house hunting and we never look at modern houses but have seen a large number of victorian small houses where the lounges are often 10x10 or even smaller. We also look at 50s houses where although the rooms sizes are better, the windows seem really high up in the walls. But the worst houses seem to be 30s terraces or semis where the lounge is only 9 or 10 foot wide, they are often described as 'spacious lounge/diner 22x10'. The kitchens are usually around 8x5 or something ridiculous. Thats not my idea of spacious but these are not modern houses.

My house is Victorian so it's the usual standard ceiling rose in the middle of each ceiling, apart from the kitchen and music room which are extensions and have those little circle ceiling lights which are a complete pain in the arse to change when a bulb goes.

OK i know this seems a bit of an odd question but what style of lighting do you have in your home? Centre fitted ceiling rose with cable, bulb, and lampshade.....or an 'alternative' method?

Looking around at modern build property, i'm a bit surprised to find all fitted with the standard centre ceiling rose, with lampshade and bulb.

I'd be interested to know what other posters have.

Centre fitted ceiling rose with cable (old fashioned) bulb and lampshade in all rooms except the kitchen, where I've got a flourescent strip, and bathroom where there is an ornamental glass shade completely covering the bulb.

    Mobile uplighters in conservatory.

Also got a 1950's standard lamp in the living room.

recessed spotlights with dimmers all over the through lounge....really nice as well as functional......replaced old fashioned grotesque hanging things.....place where we spend most time so important..... normal pendant light in bedroom, just decoration, not bothered, spotlight track things in kitchen and bathroom, both just for show too
