TP Link WA701N in Universal Extended Mode

Wonder if anyone could help me out with this, I'm having a mare.
I've got this as an extension to our Livebox wireless router (i know) with the aim of reaching to the parts of the house that can't get a signal.
Using inSSIDer, I know full well that the repeater is broadcasting, and has an infinitely better signal, but any devices that are allowed through (i've MAC protected the repeater from certain devices) just do not wish to connect to it.
Instead they still connect to the weaker, poorer, original Livebox signal.
I managed to connect once, and it seemed like pure luck.
Even physically connecting to the TP Link shows that nothing but the Livebox connects to it.
Anybody got any ideas? I've set the device up to the exact specifcations/encryption/IPs of my network/broadband/router etc.
Is it simply a case of cheap, incompatible, rubbish kit?
Edit: Just to add, I did try set it up in access point mode, physically connected to the Livebox - this worked.

the printed manual is awful and in parts wrong. the one on the disk is a bit better.
i would say it's generally not a good idea to start mac filtering until you have the network running. but i can't offer you much help as i'm completely unwilling to change the configuration of mine.
it is a nice bit of kit though. works well. i've not touched it since i first set it up.
oh one thing i do remember is that it's IP was set to be the same as my router's. had to change that.
Thanks flagpole. I forgot to add that I had already tried it with MAC off, even risked it with security off.
I even tried client mode and just couldn't get it to work as a client either.
It's IP address isn't the same as my router, so no issues there.
To the best of my knowledge Universal mode doesn't even take WDS into account. It's supposed to be even more compatible than just the normal "Repeater" mode (which I have tried).
Already set up as the same.
i don't know but client mode certainly does.
A real ball ache as i really wanted an extender solution to work.
Well the box is now intermittently crashing, to the point i'm having to switch it off and on again completely.
I re-installed the firmware, it's still doing it.
I've exhausted all possible permutations, options, etc.
It's just not working.
I think I'll try borrow a friend of mines more powerful wireless router, see if I can configure that. Best to take a relay out of the equation methinks.
