If the silence is now a religious cult thing then what are the aliens we thought were the silence?

    They may be the monks of the religious sect or something and Kovarian and her people are the regular members.

    They'd be useful foot-soldiers for at least some parts of any empire building - able to shape the history of a planet and humans are supposed to be universally important in the context of DW so having them on Earth makes sense.

    They could also be the brains behind the whole thing. An interesting idea is that there are Silents "brainwashing" the adherents to the cult - maybe even the likes of Mrs K are actually good people who are being controlled by the ultimate "power behind the throne" types. Apart from offering the possibility of "redemption" for those characters, it would give a rather nice way to hint at the difference between true faith and religious indoctrination.

    In sci-fi terms, that sort of juxtaposition of fantasy and reality to make a point is very popular - almost the backbone of the genre.

    The aliens ARE the silence, its just that the race is unknown.

    Kind of like the slitheen was the family name yet they are still known as the slitheen

    It's gonna turn out to be a Time Lord called the Silence. The 'Silents' alien race are screwed up Time Lords that sort of exist in our spacetime but then also don't, which is why people can't remember them.
