1. FM radio has been thrown a lifeline after Ministers privately accepted the digital switchover will not happen by 2015. The ‘aspirational’ target date appears to have been all but abandoned as the switch from analogue heads towards crisis point. Insiders believe the switchover may not be achievable until 2017 at the earliest and, given the current take-up rate, that a date of 2020 is more realistic. More

2. "Digital radio, more to love" says the official BBC-backed Christmas advertising campaign for digital audio broadcasting (DAB) radio. But commercial operators who have doubts about the new technology are planning a rival campaign telling listeners: "A DAB radio may be for Christmas but might not be for life". The conflicting ad campaigns threaten to bring the radio industry split over the suitability of DAB as the long-term replacement for analogue FM to a much wider public in the most embarrassing and confusing way possible. More

3. Commercial radio groups, including Capital Radio-owner Global Radio and Smooth-owner GMG Radio, said they will not be airing a Christmas advert promoting DAB radio until the Government and BBC invests more money in digital radio transmitters. The commercial sector spends about £20m a year on digital radio development. The Government has a goal of switching from analogue to digital radio transmission in 2015, but commercial radio sources said this can only be achieved if the BBC commits about £15m a year to the development of the platform. More

4. Absolute Radio is launching the next logical radio station in its "decade" theme with the additional of Absolute Radio 00s. The station will broadcast on DAB in London, and the line-up will feature Christian O’Connell on breakfast, Vicki Blight on daytime and Lucio on afternoons. Breakfast Show host Christian O’Connell will launch the station at 10am on the 10th of December as he presents an extra hour of his national breakfast show dedicated to the 00s decade on Absolute Radio. He will also continue to present an extra hour of the breakfast show exclusively on Absolute radio 00s throughout December. More

5. Welsh community radio station Afan FM is to rebrand itself as XS in the New Year. Afan FM launched in 2007, covering Neath Port Talbot and targeting itself at the 15-34 age groups. XS will launch on 7th January 2011 following test transmissions between Christmas and New Year as the Afan name disappears from the airwaves on Boxing Day. More

6. A new management structure is being introduced at East Midlands regional Heart 106 ahead of its re-launch as Gem 106 in January. More

7. John Myers is to take over as the new Chief Executive of the Radio Academy from next April, Radio Today can reveal. It brings the former CEO of GMG Radio back into a senior role in the industry following his retirement and a year-out to travel the world. He’ll take up the new post in April 2011 and amongst his responsibilities will be chairing the committees which run two major annual events - The Radio Festival and the prestigious annual Sony Radio Academy awards. More

8. Five BBC local radio stations are to try out sharing programmes on weekday afternoons, ahead of a longer-term plan to have regional shows in daytime. In an email to staff in the English Regions, controller David Holdsworth announced that three stations in Yorkshire and three in the South East would be the first to pilot the idea of networking between neighbouring stations. More

9. A new community radio station has launched, on average, every ten days in the UK, according to Ofcom's latest report. There are now 181 community stations on-air, with a further 30 preparing to launch. 171 of these are in England, 18 in Scotland, 13 in NI and nine in Wales. The Community Radio Annual Report reveals a flourishing sector, available on an analogue platform to around 11 million people, Ofcom says. The 72 page document lists everything from programming highlights to financial details. In 2009/10 the average (mean) station’s income was around £74,500. The median figure, the mid-point in the distribution of station’s income, was considerably lower at £44,500. This is because a small number of stations are earning significantly more than the majority. More

10. The online UK Radioplayer will commence a "phased roll out" in December, ahead of a full launch in February 2011. Plans were announced at The Radio Festival by Andrew Harrison, Chairman of Radioplayer and Chief Executive of RadioCentre. Andrew was on stage alongside Tim Davie, Director of BBC Audio and Music, and Ashley Tabor, Founder and Global Group CEO, during the first main session of the annual event, now based in Salford Quays. More

11. The website of the Wall Street Journal has published a review of a new book by Adrian Johns called Death of a Pirate, focusing on Major Oliver Smedley who launched the British offshore station Radio Atlanta in 1964, and was subsequently convicted of the murder of fellow offshore station owner Reg Calvert. This review is of the US edition, but it is also available in the UK. The book was published on 26th October. Read the review

1. A Sky News branded channel in the Arabic language is to make its debut in the MENA region following an agreement between Abu Dhabi Media Investment Corp (ADMIC), a private investment company owned by HH Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and British Sky Broadcasting (Sky). The Abu Dhabi-based channel will make its debut in 2012, staffed by a team of 180 multimedia journalists, and newsgathering operations elsewhere in MENA. In addition to offices in London and Washington DC the channel will also have access to Sky News’ facilities around the world. More

2. Sky have confirmed that they will be broadcasting Avatar in 3D on Christmas Day on Sky 3D. Avatar, the biggest grossing film in cinematic history, will be given its 3D TV world premiere this Christmas Eve when it is broadcast on Sky 3D (channel 217) at 8pm. Sky 3D is available to all Sky+ HD customers who have a 3D TV and Sky’s top TV package. More

3. TiVo will cost Virgin Media subscribers £199, the cableco has announced, but purchasers will have to wait if they want a three-tuner version of the next generation device. Launching in mid-December the receiver combines the familiar TiVo interface, with a library of on demand programming, a personal video recorder and web based applications. Initial shipments of the Cisco-manufactured device will feature two tuners; a three-tuner version will launch early in 2011. More

4. The price of advertising on ITV1 would rise by up to 10% if the Government removes ITV's airtime selling restrictions, a Lords committee was told yesterday. ITV: ad sales under scrutiny. 5. Britain has launched its first home-owned geostationary communications satellite in two decades with the arrival of Hylas-1. Hylas-1 is owned and operated by London-based Avanti Communications, and will provide high speed two-way broadband across Europe. The 2,300kg satellite wil orbit at 33.5 degrees West, and has eight Ka-band spot beams covering the UK, Iberian peninsula and Central/Eastern Europe. Full Details

    6. A High Court judge has dismissed arguments brought by TV Catchup Ltd that its online streaming service does not constitute broadcasting in a copyright infringement case brought against TV Catchup Ltd by ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. TV Catchup had provided access to the commercial channels as well as those belonging to the BBC as part of a 50-channel package, made available through the web, iPhones and games consoles. Like Zattoo, which withdrew from the UK after a similar dispute, a short delay is made at every channel change to allow the company to insert its own advertisements. More

    7. Viacom has confirmed that it is blocking all of its content on Google TV devices from Sony and Logitech. This includes programming from Viacom networks Comedy Central, MTV, VH1, Spike TV, BET, Nickelodeon and others. So, Google TV may want its MTV, but finds the doors closed. Last Sunday, Google TV users first reported being unable to access the Viacom channels. With the move, Viacom joins the four major US networks ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox, as well as the Hulu Plus premium service, in the boycott of Google TV. More

    8. Both Bravo and Bravo 2, which focus on male interests, are being closed on 1st January 2011. The move follows Sky’s £160 million acquisition of the Living TV Group, which was formerly known as Virgin Media TV. Sky decided to scrap Bravo, which has been running for 25 years, because it was too similar to Sky1. More

    9. Just as the Queen’s coronation boosted television sales in 1953, next years’ royal wedding might be just what the 3D TV market needs, if rumours of a 3D broadcast prove true. When Prince William marries Kate Middleton in 2011 there is speculation that the wedding could be shown in 3D both on television and in cinemas. With an expected audience of around a billion television viewers, this should be an event that 3D TV makers will be looking to capitalise on. More

    10. Real Digital has won its fight to be included in Ofcom’s wholesale must offer (WMO) obligation for the carriage of Sky Sports 1 and 2. Real plans to launch an alternative digital satellite TV service in late January 2011 offering carriage to channels already using the 28 degrees East position. Sky is already obliged to offer the channels to Virgin Media, Top Up TV and BT Vision under the terms of the Tribunal’s April ruling and Justice Baring described the application from Real Digital managing director David Henry as being “Me Too!” More

    12. Major electronics retailers have (as of 6th July 2010) officially stopped selling analogue-only television sets in Britain as the digital switchover gathers pace. According to switchover body Digital UK, British retailers have adapted their sales strategy in preparation for the switch from analogue to digital terrestrial television (DTT). More

    1. Electronics firm LG is to air its first 3D cinema ads as part of a £6m integrated campaign to promote its 3D TV sets. The campaign will also incorporate digital, experiential and social media activity to push its range of 3D TV sets. The cinema ads are the first to be made for the brand and will air from 10 December. The digital and cinema ads, directed by 'The IT Crowd' actor Richard Ayoade, were created by Mindshare and will be shown as exclusive content before new releases 'Tron Legacy' and the new 'Chronicles of Narnia' film, which premiere on 9 December. More

    2. Falling hardware prices of up to 40% are leading to year one adoption of 3DTV at a far quicker rate than was the case for HD. Futuresource Consulting expects global sales of 3DTVs to exceed four million this year. Across Western Europe alone, 1.2 million 3DTVs will be sold, rising to more than three million in 2011. In the United States, more than five million 3DTVs will be sold next year. More

    3. Eurosport has confirmed plans to launch a 3D service in 2011 but states that this will be event-led and unlikely to be a full linear 3D channel, writes Adrian Pennington. The sportscaster, owned by French media group TF1, could produce its next 3D experience around the Australian Open Tennis in January but believes there is not yet enough content, or demand, to justify a 24/7 channel. More

    4. A new study on the attitudes of both the production sector and consumers towards the 3D format has painted an uncertain future. Ben Piper, Director, Multiplay Market Dynamics, Strategy Analytics said the sale of 3D displays only told half the story. By 2014 the number of people who have 3D displays, HD services and a 3D service available would number 24 million, just 14% of the total who are expected to have a 3D display in the home. “We believe 3DTV still has some significant barriers, market uncertainty, not least contest availability and over all consumer interest and willingness to pay,” he said. Highlighting data from the Strategy Analytics 2010 Digital Media and Television Survey, which took in 2,000 US consumers and 700 in each of four European countries, Piper said that 44% of those in the UK survey were either not sure or believed that all TV programmes would soon be in the 3D format. 5. Philips is set to launch the world’s first glasses-free 3D TV as early as 2013 and the company is showing a working prototype in Berlin. Also on display is the full HD 3D LED TV in the Cinema 21:9 Platinum Series. Philips has been working on glasses-free 3D TV for a number of years. Demos were given all around the world, also at IFA in Berlin since 2007. Interestingly, the company decided to give up this type of 3D development just before the outbreak of the 3D craze in April 2009. The demo on Berlin is done by Dimenco, a company that was spun off from Philips. More

    6. The BBC has said that is looking to video both the opening and closing ceremonies of the London Olympics in the 3D format. However, the corporation has emphasized that while it intends to capture the Olympics in 3D, this is not committing to their transmission. More

Has Sky's EPG music reverted to the festive tootlings yet?

I'd check but I'm at work.

Going to be losing the EPG music soon as I called up on Saturday for a spending spree (and to buy the family a Christmas present to share rather than individual ones!) and splashed out on a 1TB box with self install to replace the Thomson Sky+ and to go with the 37" LG HD telly we bought for the sitting room a few months ago!

I know you can still access the EPG music on the HD EPG, but it's not quite the same as having it there when you're browsing the guide.

Bravo, Bravo+1, Bravo 2, Channel One and Channel One+1 will all close on 1st January 2011.

Challenge will most likely replace Channel One on Freeview from that date also.

Further to earlier postings on this subject, Sky has just told all channels that they are going ahead with the HD Channel Swap proposition, with a few caveats:

+ Regionalised channels may choose to opt out under some conditions

+ Pay Channels not retailed by Sky can opt out.

Sky has started another very short consultation (5 days!) before going totally firm. This is really to allow channels a chance to opt out now, or be stuck with it.

Amendments to the EPG agreement with channels have been sent out to effect the changes involved.

Sky claims to have published on its corporate website a new version of the EPG listings methodology (but I don't think they have) which reflects all the changes. The version that's there is still the March 2010 version.

I wonder when Ofcom will suss out that channel 902 is still showing programmes from a company whose licence has been revoked :) , is it because it was being sub-leased by another channel provider ?

    Update

"53215" has now been relabelled as 'Universal' (Ireland?).

Don't think this has been mentioned?

Is that the version of Universal with Irish adverts?

CH 948 has been renamed "Redlightzone2".

Tease Me TV2 is able to continue on 902 because the licence is held by Playboy,Bang Media lease the channel from them and as such they (Bang) are the programme provider but not the licence holder.

You can take the Food Network HD out of the up coming channels list as it's been available for some time now.:)

Has anyone looked at the new SkyText available on the HD channels, initially on Sky News HD, quite an improvement on the original system.:)

Buried in this press release about Cinémoi launching on Virgin Media, is the following -
In 2011, Cinémoi will diversify its content to lifestyle programmes (Fashion, Wine and Life style).

Also, it's being suggested over on Cable Forum that FX HD will expand its broadcast hours from 5th January.

Surely Ofcon have said that the licence holder must also be the programme provider in their October 2010 update? Or are we seeing EU licences in action. Ofcon have specifically revoked TMTV2's licence and there has been no attempt to change the name or even the look of the channel. I think that more enforcement action is likely.

That report does not state that Channel One will close on 1/1/11 as you claimed, just that it is planned to close. It was the Channel One closure date that I was interested in seeing official confirmation for. I agree it's likely to close in January but I would like official dates with sources if possible.

Closing on 1/1/11 would be unusual as it is a Saturday and part of a public holiday weekend. Much more likely to be 4th or 5th Jan.

Not so sure, Computers are wonderful things.
They changed one of the Kids channels seconds after midnight on the 1st of Jan this year.
The channels may go off air on the 1st and then removed on the 3rd

What was that by the way? I know Sky promptly relabelled Fox Kids as Jetix not long after that replaced FK on 1st January 2005

    http://www.digitalspy.com/broadcasting/news/a289271/sky-confirms-bravo-shutdown-date.html

Been mentioned on a few sites that's when it's closing.

No idea if Sky Atlantic will be immediate or will they wait a week to launch? Channel One is said to close same time as Bravo anyway. So Challenge will probably be launched instantly.

The wording of the artcle is a little ambiguous I'll admit, but I would imagine they will close all service at the same time, gives them plenty of time to test Sky Atlantic and it's +1 also, which I presume will be using the old space left by the closures of these channels.
