Hi Everyone
I wondered if anyone could help me? I've just bought a Hudl and not being a Techy was wondering if someone could answer my questions.
Firstly, Virus protection, do we need it? I've heard differing opinions on this - could do with a free one if we do.
Secondly, I have a music/mp3 collection on my main PC and was wondering if anyone could recommend a program to organise and play music.
and lastly ... for now, ebooks. can anyone recommend the best 'kindle' type program. Also I am aware that there are different file extensions on the book files - I have seen .mobi and .epub - what is the difference?
Your help would be appreciated.

Not compulsory, obviously, but it will do no harm.
I use Avast which is free but upgradable to a paid version. I use Rocket Player on my hudl which is free (funky-looking too and you can get different colour skins for it) and transfer music from my iPhone using an app called Easy Phone Tunes so my organising is done really. But you can organise your music using Windows Explorer and then drag and drop your entire music file into your hudl using your USB lead. It will copy the files across and you will see the music file in your hudl when you link it to your PC.
There's an app called Calibre which comes highly recommended although I've never used it. I transfer books with the same drag and drop process as above by using WE once again - it's so handy and well worth becoming familiar with
Re the file extensions, .mobi files are the ones that your Kindle app will recognise - all the files in that folder will be .mobi The free Kindle app in the Play Store is great and your books will sync across all of your devices that have the app installed.
For my epubs, I use Aldiko which is free from the Play Store as well.
Good luck and I hope you enjoy your hudl as much as I do

I recently discovered a great app search engine called App Crawlr which you might also find useful.
Have fun and let me know how you get on
1. Avast
2. Evernote
3. Dropbox
4. Boat Browser
5. Gmail
6. Kingsoft Office
7. Kindle
8. ES File Explorer
9. Simplenote
10. Battery
Next to be installed would be:
11. Netflix
12. eBay
13. Aldiko
14. Rocket Player
15. Twitter
16. iPlayer
17. TVCatchup
18. Drive
19. PayPal
20. Wallpapers Bay
I also always install Aptoide which enables you to install non Google app stores such as Slide Me and Blackmart Alpha. The latter is a brilliant one for getting paid apps for nowt
I am struggling with my SD card - the Hudl isn't reading from it....(if I were in a marching band I'd be playing the piano!) and am in the process of trying the card from my phone.
Fingers crossed.

Considering ipad mini or Hudl for my 5yo and latter is nudging ahead especially with expandable memory as device only needed for watching films, very basic app type games and basic camera for photos etc
Would be great if FaceTime was possible but that's an ideal rather than a preferred
Have you checked (sorry if this sounds patronising) that it's working by using a card-reader?
I found this for another FM the other day because the card has to be mounted this way up.
I'm not a customer but Sky Go is available in the Play Store and it's free.
Sky Go is only available on a very limited number of android tablets, that don't include the Hull at the moment
http://help.sky.com/tv/sky-tv-on-other-devices/sky-go-supported-devices#tab-3
From what I can gather this is soon to change and it will be available on just about every tablet. There's a thread on here somewhere about it being in beta testing at the moment.
That's why I don't limit myself to the Play Store and use other stores like the ones I mentioned above.
Ah OK. Well it's not officially supported at least. Even yours might not work for streaming. As you say impossible to test without a log in.
I've tried 2 SD cards, I don't have a card reader but both seem to be ok on my pc.
The Hudl shows how much memory is available but when I load stuff via the lead from the PC it all goes straight to the 'main' 16 gb internal memory even when I drop it on to the card. It might be that one the internal memory is full it will shift to the card...??, I have put some things manually on the SD and these aren't appearing.
Also I have put a few PDF docs on the Hudl but I cannot bring them up to read then
Any ideas folks?
When you double-click, it should open and list all of the files that are stored in your hudl and the SD card will show as a separate entity at the end of the list.
You should be able to drag & drop whatever file(s) you are transferring, directly into the SD card.
It won't (or doesn't usually) move the file but will copy the contents to whichever location you specify.
Good luck
PS - check the post I did earlier just to make sure you're loading the card correctly otherwise it simply won't work and worst case scenario it could get stuck in your device.
I always install an anti-virus app when I first get my gizmos and TBF, I've ended up with shite on my tablets from apps I've DLd from the Play Store - usually some kind of adware I didn't want.
1. Open Windows Explorer once hudl is linked to PC
2. Double-click on hudl in left pane under Computer heading. This will then show 2 icons of your hudl - one that says internal storage and the other should say SD card.
If you can't see your SD card at this point then it's either a bad card or it has been inserted incorrectly.
3, Double-click on the hudl again in the left-hand pane and it will show what is in the main window but as a list and minus the icons.
4, By double-clicking on either you will see all the folders therein and that is where you will drop whatever you want to transfer into eg the Kindle folder for your .mobi files or the Music folder for your music files.
I'll have another go.
Cheers Ginger
Firstly I would say "monitor app permissions ruthlessly".
If they ask what they do not really need to function then I do not chance an install.
Similarly if they are getting sensitive permissions then I check reviews even more carefully.
HI BUNIONS
Took your advice and started from scratch - formatted the cards and 'reloaded' one.
I've used my main PC and laptop to attempt to transfer files - the laptop is running Windows 8 and it doesn't like my Hudl or its cards at all -it freezes - no matter the PC works fine......
I think I may now be OK but the curious think is that the Hudl is showing the card as empty while in fact its half full...... Its a Kingston card so is OK.
Fingers crossed
Thanks again Bunions you are a star.
Yep Sky have had a change of heart and the new version next month should run on nearly all tablets.
Re: music, you may want to consider Google Music
Its not for everyone but allows you to but all your music collection online then play it back from anywhere - your PC, your phone, your tablet - your friends PC even! Only catch is that it relies on having a connection to play. But if its mostly for home use then this should be fine.
What I think I would do, would be to buy a card reader from eBay as they're dirt cheap and simple to use.
That way, you can just do the transfer from your PC or laptop straight to the card and bypass the hudl entirely.
Just mount the card into the hudl when you've done all your transfers and you'll be good to go
And, by using ES File Explorer, you'll be able to move things from the card to the internal storage on your hudl if you want to, or copy them there, or delete them or whatever.
It's a great little free app.
No worries Ginger.
I only know what I do because techy-folk are usually really cool and love sharing what they know and like you, I was keen to learn
Good luck and keep me posted.
Have sent for a 'branded' decent' card from ebay. Will have another bash when it comes

'Buy cheap - buy twice' and all that.
Hope it works this time Ginger
