I bought the first two annuals as they came out, but realised they were just reprints of the monthly strips
The good thing about the first two though, is that they had strips that were out before I started reading VIZ !
I loved the strap line across the top of this months' cover - "Not a single f***ing word about the Royal Baby !"
Viz is quite funny and very cutting. It really is in a class of it's own. There have been some substandard comics like Spit, Zit and Smut but they have fallen by the wayside and never could hold a torch to Viz.
Went into my local newsagents and I had read Viz before but wanted to see what the other comics like this were like. I asked the man "Do you sell Spit here", he said "Sorry we don't sell crap like that". I asked "Do you sell Zit?"
He said, "We don't sell Zit, we don't sell Spit and we don't sell s**t".
I had to laugh to myself and I still do, it was over 15 years ago!

Most of them were just unfunny crap to jump on the bandwagon when Viz was at the peak of popularity. I remember Brain Damage (The Damage?), Zit, Smut, Ziggy and a real childish one called Poot. All of them were pretty rubbish though as you said.

I never even heard of Ziggy or Poot so they must have been really bad! I heard Zit once took a massive hit over making a sick joke about Anne Diamond and she sued them for a lot of money. They didn't sink then but they had to print on poor thin quality paper to try and save costs. Serves them right!
I have been buying some old annuals on amazon of late, picking them up for a few quid each. I used to get them all the time in the late 90s and sort of drifted away. Amazing stuff though, some of the cartoons are not great, but the readers pages are golden and them daft adverts for strange collectors stuff are the stuff of legend. (the Jade Goody and Princess Diana Ping Pong scene had me in stitches. Made from "reclaimed from the abandoned Indian rail electrification programme" haha)
I remember Viz had a strip called The Clone Princess. It was a story where Princess Diana (who was alive at the time) had a clone made of her so she could do more caring and then the clone turned evil and it was left saying the clone had to be destroyed.
For some reason the following issue did not have a follow up episode even though Princess Diana had not died then. She did however die before the next issue. Suffice to say the strip was no more.
A lot of the strips have "And in next week's issue..." type of thing, despite the fact VIZ comes out once a month !
I love the spoof adverts, including the apparent obsession with sheds, and 'Mrs. B, Essex' who always says "IT'S A BOON !"
I remember an advert for a device called "Clag - gone" which was a static bicycle with the rear tyre made from a wire brush which gets rid of your dried-on poo as your cycled !
Does anyone know why it is called Viz? I think it's because viz is an old word meaning "for example" and you sometimes see it in dictionaries. Viz is an "example" of what it is making fun of, I think. Have I got that right?

From Wikipedia:
The word Viz itself comes from the Latin words vide licet, which is usually abbreviated to "viz", meaning "more appropriately or accurately; namely".

The Pathetic Sharks
Modern Parents (So much for the PC brigade being all for democracy and insisting that people respect everybody else's
opinions and lifestyle choices)
The Critics (middle class snobs!)
Spoilt Bastard (A good belt'd sort him out)
Roger Mellie (A potential candidate for slanderous life and career wrecking allegations of paedophilia during the 70s brought up by attention seekers in their 40s/50s)
The Bacons (Deffo Jeremy Kyle material)
Major Misunderstanding (Who the **** do people like him think they are?)
I have that ad on the back of one of my annuals (I think it's the Cleveland Steamer). To get to the point, I really liked the bit about the 'internationally unknown' artist being the creator of 'the bestselling "Cheeky Bunny" series of minature racist figurines', as well as the 'Freddie Mercury Tribute Bum Clock'.
Do you remember the 'Elvis Presley Dambusters Clock Plate of Tutankhamun'? I read on the comments that some bloke's brother sent off to the address on the advert and actually recieved one! Personally I didn't even know those things were real until recently. There is also a picture of the Elvis clock plate next to the 'Life of Jesus Christ in Cats' plate. :D (I think that picture was taken at some Viz anniversary exhibition).
Here's another comedy gem - The Shannon Matthews Collector's Plate. 'Endorsed by Jeremy Kyle' and '...crafted, using 100% pure crockery obtained from a car boot sale...'

It's this very month on the Viz calender (the one that comes free with the mag).
This year's calender has one of the tat adverts every month. My favourite is 'Ich Bin Ein Naughty Boy!' from January, with a baby Fuhrer stuffing his face with chocolates.
Thanks for the posts guys - brought a lot of memories back :)as years ago my brother bought it and it was great fun. Must buy the latest copy at the weekend - no matter the price, it's hilarious...
I got into Viz when I was about 8 thanks to my uncle and I still buy it every month (although I do get tired of shopkeepers asking if I'm buying it for my boyfriend...). I love the artist that does the Scum Mothers and We Buy Gold strips. They're so depressing Long time favourites have to be Spoilt Bastard, Modern Parents and Biffa Bacon. I got a. calendar of adverts last month which I love, especially the Tit Full Of Beer
Comments
Private Eye had a headline of Mother Has Baby.
Also, in this issue, I loved the article that implied that bungle from rainbow was a mythical creature, like big foot....,
