The BFI is giving you the chance to step back in time and explore Britain as it was 120 years ago.

Britain on Film is a new service featuring home movies, newsreels, adverts and television shows dating from as far back as 1895.

Users of the service can search for films by location, meaning they can get an insight into life in their hometown or at a place with special significance for them.
Sounds fantastic but not able to get on at the moment! Anyone else able to open the page?

Some of the Yorkshire films featured on BBC Look North this evening. Looks fascinating. I'll take a look when the site is less busy.

I finally managed to access the player after 9pm tonight. Excellent quality and very absorbing content. It will be very popular.

There are also regional film archives around the country with some good films - North West FA, East Anglian FA, Yorkshire FA, Scottish Screen Archive and I sure others.

I found that interesting, but for a more detailed look at your home town, with many photos (no films) going back in some cases to the late 1800s and an opportunity to share memories with like-minded people on the message board, try this site and type in the name of your home town.

That's just one of the idiosyncrasies of certain virus protection systems.
Francis Frith is a reputable company, selling photographic prints

John Sargent did a whole series based on their extensive library of Victorian photographs. Sadly, not once did he mention their free facility for people to access archive photographs from their home town.
