Is custard a solid or a liquid?

If you mix enough custard powder and water together (not ready made stuff) it produces a substance that acts like a solid (if you punch it quickly or roll it into a ball) and also can act like a liquid (if you touch it gently it's like water).

This was shown on Braniac a while back I think - that guy ran across a swimming pool of the stuff:if you run across it quickly you won't sink (solid properties), but if you stood still in it, you would sink!

Just thought i'd share magical properties of custard :D

I did'nt know you could make custard, I always get it out of a packet. Its a liquid-solid.

    School/Hospital Custard - Solid as it's lumpy
    Your own - Liquid

Materials which take on a solid form when left alone yet act as a liquid when agitated are thixotropic.
    I think that's a lovely word. Thixotropic
Probably explains why I remember it, seventeen years after I first encountered it, in the lab of a company where they tested gels.

Actually I usually cheat and buy the ready made stuff rather than use that Birds-type powder, you can get really nice fresh custard in the chiller section in the shops too. I'm getting hungry.

No I use to roll the bowl round and round for ages and hit the mix with a spoon:o

The first time I used it to make custard ( 30 years ago) I was so engrossed with my new toy that, when my then husband came home from work , there was no dinner ready let alone afters :o:D

It's a liquid because if you pour it into a container, it takes its shape. Fact.

As is treacle, syrup and jelly.

Lol..I was going to post that :)

Jon tickle was the guy who walked on custard.

At school you could roll the custard up into a ball and throw it at the ceiling, where it would stick for about 15 mins, before falling, long enough for the next class to come in.

Yikes, I thought it was a cooking basic! The packet and powdered stuff bears no relation to egg custard. It's very easy to make and is delicious.

If it tastes nice when you're licking it off the skin of a sexy lady, then it doesn't really matter does it?

Is that when you have to heat milk and cream and add sugar and vanilla extract or something? It probably tastes nicer that way but I could never be bothered to do that every time I ate it!
