http://radiotoday.co.uk/2014/06/alex-lester-moved-to-weekends-at-radio-2/

Janice Long and Alex Lester do 12-3am on weekdays and weekends respectively; Richard Allinson loses his regular slot; Huey Morgan and Bob Harris essentially become weekend early breakfast shows, and 3-5am will be filled with specialist show repeats.

It's June already, isn't it?

EDIT: It's not a joke. The BBC press release: http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2014/radio-2-new-overnight-schedule

Shame that, really enjoy listening to Huey and Bob......to be shunted into the middle of the night is not good!

You can just sense the other presenters are a bit miffed too, I don't believe the positive comments they've made about the changes at all.

Alot of unhappy truckers I think with Alex Lester moving to weekends. Bloody ridiculous that Bob Harris is moving to 3am! And what good is repeats during the week? If they want to save some money broadcast some archive shows instead or better still get rid of the stupid 5-6.30 slot that Vanessa Feltz is in.

    Abso-freaking-lutley.

That Feltz slot is a total waste of resources. Janice till 3, Alex till 6 and Evans from 6. Budget reduced, everyone's happy.

Repeats of specialist shows on the biggest station in the UK is just a joke.

Perhaps Alex wanted a lesser workload? In the grand scheme if things it makes sense. All of the BBC are cost-cutting; perhaps the overnight repeats could be simulcasted with 6 Music à la Radio 1/1Xtra; maybe consider repeating old In Concerts, Live at the BBC or Friday Night is Music Night. Surely, though, overnights on weekends have smaller audiences than overnights on weekdays? I'm curious also as to whether further changes are due.

Yet again Richard Allinson loses his shows. He lost his late show, then went onto cover shows, then returned with overnights, now lost this shows. I'm surprised Radio 2 have gone down this road of automation with Global Smooth and Heart etc have got live overnight shows. I thought Alex Lester show was popular during the weekdays and Richard Allinson was at the weekends. to me it looks like a cost cutting exercise.

Bob Shennan, Controller, BBC Radio 2, says: “I'm delighted that Janice and Alex will be hosting the new show, bringing music and entertainment to our faithful night-time audience. We have had to make some difficult decisions in light of our reduced budgets, which is why we are reducing some of our live originations overnight, but I’m pleased that we are able to offer this new live programme seven nights a week. I’d like to thank Richard for his contribution to weekends and his continuing association with the network in the future.”

Although I don't knock her talent as a truly experienced and very knowledgeable broadcaster I don't feel the afternoon slot is for her.
I know she did mid mornings on Radio 1 but she is so much better where she is in the evening. to me she seems uncomfortable 2-5. I feel the afternoon needs more punch.
    just my thoughts.

What a sad state of affairs when the biggest music station in the country can't afford to be live overnights. If people want to hear repeats of Sounds of the 60s, Sounds of the 70s etc. then surely that's what the BBC iPlayer is for.

When this comes in will there be *any* radio stations at all in the UK with live presenters throughout the night?

I thought the BBC was flogging on demand, i player to death a few years ago. Obviously not in radio 2 case. Seems they have had a real budget cut.

It's appalling that so many shows aren't transmitted live whereas they used to be. Bob Harris is a prime example

No excuse for Radio 2 I'm afraid. This is what the BBC are good at, crying the poor tale.

Got to agree, how much would Feltz be on I wonder? Scrap that show, Janice 12-3am and Alex 3-6.30am - problem solved.

It keep's the music fans happy with the repeats. There is a degree of budget cuts the BBC are dealing with. In the other hand Shennan can't be bloody minded and will have too justify if there is a number of celebrities used in other areas to host shows, with these changes happening. I'm guessing lots presenters have had reduced salaries too.

Didn't they do this way back when Richard Allinson lost his late show get him to cover shows. One man can only cover certain amount, but with Sara, Jo and Zoe on the station they could use those resources instead of celebrities too?

    Pathetic, absolutely pathetic.

This is not a 'difficult decision', this is the path of least resistance. A difficult decision would be dropping the entirely unnecessary Vanessa Feltz show, or replacing a highly paid daytime presenter like Steve Wright with someone cheaper and fresher.

I've defended Radio Two when the commercial sector bleats. But if a station on its budget has to resort to overnight repeats instead of creative original programming, something's rotten at the network. Shameful, there's no excuses.

Creative programmes ant happening and they have lost there way to go automated.

They are playing into the hands of commercial radio who do live overnight shows.

Although production staff have been cut too at the BBC over the years.

The BBC over spent on the new building and upgrading equipment and new studios. Failed high tech stuff too over the years.

    Far more logical would be:

    Mon to Thursday night: 12.00 Janice, 3.00 Archive 4.00 - 6.30 Alex.
    Fri night: 12.00 Huey, 3.00 Archive / Repeats 5.00 - 8.00 Early show
    Sat night: 12.00 Bob, 3.00 - 6.00 Archive / Repeats
    Sun night: 12.00 Richard, 3.00 Archive 4.00 - 6.30 Alex

So live from 4 on weekdays, 5 on Saturdays and 6 or 7 on Sundays.

The Archive slot could be old Radio 1 or 2 documentaries / shows and could replace that strand on 6 Music. Noticed that Janice has lost Sunday night.

Might we hear more of Alex Lester and Richard Allinson covering weekday slots? A real shame in my opinion to lose Alex. I work 4 days a week and always listen to Alex from just after 4 as I get ready and drive to work. If I wanted to hear repeats I would listen on iplayer.
