Anyway this is a YMMV deal as to what's popular in your area.
Mostly Ford's as the go faster toys of choice in my area, Pugs and VW's for more affluent areas, Golfs becoming more popular as they aged and got cheaper S/H.
R5 Turbo was very popular, just gauging the interest in them, but we'd rarely see one round my way, I'd see them more as I went West ward out of London.
Saw them getting hooned around Slough, they're like Hen's teeth now, can't remember the last time I saw one.
Manta's were popular too, we rarely saw them, more likely to see a 'Dad's Bruiser' Monza.

Edit: On that tip, mechanic chap I know, his Son does some work in his spare time for a wealthy Doctor, collection of stupidly powerful 911 turbo's he uses for racing.
Chap is forever spending absolute bundles (10's of £1000's) on them, tunes them to the bleeding edge where they're horribly unreliable and require constant fettling by his in-house Mechanic.

I'd have liked to have heard 'something' about what they did to the shell in the places they mentioned they'd done work, I could see some new steel in there, but it's not going to happen.
I'm guessing that Ch4 have taken note of the feedback from the last series and this is what that feedback has told them people want.
Count your blessing's there could be another series of Bernie Fineman and his oppo making a bollox of classic cars, at least these cars are top of the shop.
You'd probably need to be a marque specialist/concours judge to find a fault on any of them.
I can't watch Overhaulin and I downloaded a few of them, because it's too much nonsense with pranks and some giddy bird front n centre 'helping'.
There's some cracking work been done in the program but the presentation ruins it completely.

It's all in the title, for the love of cars, as objects that people have great affection for, just and 'excuse' to look at love/affection.

There is that I suppose, PM. How in God's name that ever got commissioned we shall never know. Quentin Wilson did a 30 min show on BBC2 years ago about individual marques that was good. And Wayne Carini Chasing classic cars on Quest was very good, although still light on engineering to a degree.

He wasn't "given the car back" it was bought at auction by his father-in-law and gifted back to him.
I know it may have been a bit contrived, but it made for a lovely story. I'd much rather a programme like this on a Sunday night than one of three grown men destroying classic cars or hooning around in over-priced yuppie toys.
As for restoring the car back to original GTi spec, I kind of felt that at first, but the shell was probably already too far hacked for that as it was the owner's original intention to turn in into a classic rally car. It was obviously missing most of the standard parts such and interior trim & dashboard.
I'm guessing that it was turned into a Pierburg replica because that was a car that Walter had worked upon during his career?
I wouldn't want for the most expensive car in the world (or any amount of money for that matter) to be in Walter's position. Good luck to him and his family, it's nice that he should be treated with such fondness and respect. He's clearly a very talented man who loved his career in motorsport.
