Modern Times: Welcome to Mayfair BBC2

Surprised not to see a thread on this documentary about people who live in Mayfair. Who would have thought that there is actually an estate of social housing (posh term for Council estate!) in Mayfair! :o

Apparently it had to be built when the wealthy needed their servants living close by. One of the residents was a London 'cabbie'.

Some hilariously 'snooty' pretentious accents! :D
This Modern Times film reveals a world full of surprise and deep contrasts - from the estate agent selling multimillion-pound mansions to the NHS doctor whose patients range from billionaires to people on benefits, and the craftspeople who keep the wealthy in their finery to the small café owners hanging onto their livelihoods by their fingernails. With the global super rich clamouring for an address in Mayfair, it is undergoing one of the biggest changes in its long history - but can Mayfair's unique cocktail of eccentricity, affluence and the everyday survive in the face of the relentless commercialisation of the area?

    Interesting and annoying!

Shame that greedy landlords and property developers are basically forcing small shop owners and long term residents out so that brand designer shops and luxury apartments for billionaires can be built. Felt sorry for those being forced out.

The woman with the parrot was indeed bonkers as her partner to be said when he first met her!

Yes a shame about the Italian Coffee shop owners though judging by their ages it looked as though it could be a blessing in a way.

Some folk were pretty grounded though. Was it the Doctor (i think) who told when visiting one of his very wealthy patients at home, the guy pressed a buzzer on his chair for his servant to walk from yards away simply to hand him his cup of tea which he could have picked up himself!

There were a few smug faces that I itched to slap! That estate agent and his PR colleague for two! That GP saw life - he dealt with billionaires and a woman who was effectively a slave. I love wandering around Mayfair, the old buildings are beautiful. You can tell the area is changing though. It was always a rich area but a bling element is taking over. That florist described them as the super rich and that there would be an uprising if people found out just how vast the difference was between them and the rest of us.

I was trying to work out the age of parrot woman compared to her boyfriend's age.

The film seemed to be based round the Residents' Association with the parrot woman popping up everywhere.

No mention of the sex trade that Shepherd's Market used to be famous for.

I hated the estate agent's trickle down wealth line, one of the billionaires in The Super Rich doc nailed it when he said that although he earns 1,000 times the average wage he doesn't but 1,000 pairs of jeans or houses

She was completely bonkers. She seemed to be living in an Edwardian fantasy world.

They could have made a programme about the Italian coffee shop on its own. Would have loved to hear more about their lives.

The woman with the parrot was trying too hard to come across as an eccentric. Probably thought she had a potential TV career.

The ending with the parrot was brilliant.

The GP claimed to know of instances of slavery. I wonder if the police will be calling round at his surgery for more information about a crime.

I was shocked at that comment about that poor girl. But when he said he has a few billionaires on his list and a couple of them use the NHS :o

I think she was a bit of attention seeking twit and he looked old enough to be her father

It was very odd that that wasn't mentioned. I used to work in Green Park and didn't know when I first walked round Sherpherd's Market during my lunch hour that it was a place to do business. I went back to work and told the men in the office about all the cars that had kept stopping they thought it was hilarious that I didn't know.
