Hi,
I've just bought a Kindle Paperwhite and connected it to my home broadband via wifi.
The Kindle took me to a registration screen and I started typing in my email address. Suddenly however it went to another screen before i'd finished typing and welcomed me by name
I've never owned a Kindle of any kind before nor any other E reader tablets etc.
Should I be concerned by this do you think as it seemed to just find me with very little input from me?

No you use the same account to register your new kindle, that way you can download all the books you've bought on your basic kindle. You can have multiple kindles\devices registered to the same account.
No need. I currently have four Kindles, Kindle for PC and Kindle Android app registered to my account.
So I don't need to change anything when I eventually get the paperwhite?
If you forget to tick gift, and intend to give it to someone you'll need to deregister it from your account so that when the new device is connected to wifi it prompts for an amazon account.
No, you don't. Once you've registered the Paperwhite if it hasn't been yet, you'll find two devices registered to your Amazon account under Manage Your Devices in the Manage Your Kindle section.
For as long as your Kindle devices are registered to your account, you can buy and download ebooks via your Amazon account to either or both of your Kindle devices at same time.
Quite useful if you have one Kindle device at one place and another Kindle at another place because this means you can read the same book at either place.
Normal to put your card details in or about feeling uneasy about it?
I don't think I have ever put my details on to my Kindle but it is tied into my Amazon account which does have my card details. If this was a new Amazon account for him the the card details will probably just be routine as they want them if he decides to buy a book.
It's normal if your husband doesn't have an Amazon account.
If providing CC details on his Kindle still makes him uncomfortable, he can visit the Amazon.co.uk site and open an account there. Once done, he will only need to use the details of that account (his email address and password) when prompted on his Kindle.
The Kindle won't ask again after that prompt. It just needs those details to register his device to his Amazon account.
Your husband were right to be cautious, anyway, as that's the way one should be with all new devices.
I would highly recommend the Paperwhite. I have a basic kindle and was perfectly happy with it but OH bought me the Kindle Paperwhite as a surprise for Xmas. It is brilliant. A huge improvement on the basic model. If you have the cash and fancy treating yourself you will love it.
Ordered it on 30th. Due between sat and tues. Hopefully it'll last longer than my basic one although that lasted 2 years.
