    East Sussex, near Brighton.

I'm sorry if I sounded I was getting at you about the grammar, it's not meant in a nasty way.

I cannot add to your discussion much as I have no experience of Scottish education matters.

    1. Yes I realise that this isn't a Scotland only forum. That's good.:)

    2. Your (you're) right but the forum has Scottish schools in the title. Well, no. The forum title is General Discussion. Your topic title is National 5 bankrupting Scottish schools. So far you haven't actually provided any evidence that Scottish schools are going bankrupt because of National 5s. The fact that you have to buy some writing paper is at best some proof that in this specific class there's no budget this year for paper. That hardly constitutes bankruptcy.

3.There a big difference between the Scottish education system and the English education system Yes. But there are also a lot of similarities. English, Welsh and NI schools are feeling the pinch from tighter budgets.

It was a similar situation 35 years ago when I was in education myself. This was at a time before electronic whiteboards and teaching assistants and computers in every classroom. Teachers wrote in chalk on a board, then rubbed it off at the end of the lesson. We didn't have copious printed notes and a dozen different ways of approaching a topic just in case the students struggled to muster more than a five minute attention span. If we wanted to look something up we went to the library and found a book to read on a subject. I'm guessing that our school budgets were much smaller than today; and there were still years when we had to share books. Oh, and we had to buy our own paper and ring binders for project work then too.

All your examples are things of world wide concern I don't think anyone outside Scotland really cares about scottish schools
You're right; they are. However, they were offered to rebut a point you made about geography and the eligibility to reply. There are plenty of people around the world who don't care about those global issues

I'm not having a go; just pointing out that you are coming from a very privileged position. By inference you are suggesting that all the rest of your classes provide you with all the materials required for you to complete your class work. Maybe you want to take a step back and just re-evaluate the scale of what's happening. The phrase "storm in a teacup" comes to mind. It's certainly not the catastrophe you seem to imagine.

Recently I've started my highers but one of my subjects have been unable to provide paper and we have to buy our own as they have spent all their budget last year on new textbooks for National 5. I wondered if any other Scottish schools are suffering financial problems due to National 5's.

Best buy yourself some paper then. It's not *that* expensive - and at least you can choose better quality stuff than you will normally be provided with.

Although surely everything is done on a laptop/tablet these days - just like in the workplace...
