Car tax disc reminder problem

Hi all

I received the reminder this morning and on it, it says:

'This vehicle needs an appropriate MOT test certificate'

Does that mean the car's been failed since the last time it went for the test? - back in May of last year?

I checked this website to make sure:

https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-status

... and it says it's passed.

Has there been a misprint on the form?

Thanks in advance.

No it just means they need to see a copy of the mot certificate.

If you have the reminder then you can apply online and the tax website will automatically check MOT and insurance, no need for you to do anything except pay up.

As others have said, it doesn't mean the car failed. It's a reminder that the car is over 3 years old, and requires a current valid MOT test certificate in order to be able to tax the vehicle.

It doesn't. All MOTs are electronic now.

Just go online OP and renew your tax.

    I have a paper certificate, I'm sure.
I think I took it to my local Post Office when I renewed my tax.

The term 'certificate' will be a blanket term to include the option of renewing online and the check being done without looking at a piece of paper. You still have a certificate, and need to produce the piece of paper if renewing at a post office.

When I retaxed my daughter's car at the PO a few weeks ago she only needed the reminder. Everything else was there on her screen when she put the details in including the fact it had a valid MOT and insurance.

They put the MOT test certificate thing on every reminder relating to a car over three years old, as that's when MOT's are required.

The certificate is now just a printed A4 piece of paper, no watermarks, nothing special about it. You are advised to check on-line if you are need to check validity of MOT.

We all have a paper copy. To tax the vehicle at a PO they just check the electronic info from the DVLA website.

My understanding is that if there is less than a month before your MOT is due, you can't renew your RFL on-Line.

Having recently done this I can confirm that the test certificate must be valid on the day that the new tax disc is to start. If it is not, as I experienced, then you cannot renew online until you have had the vehicle tested, passed and the DVLA online record updated which in my case I was able to do online, the same day, a couple of hours after the test.

At least this will soon be a non problem, when it all becomes paperless.
