Don't think the thread is weird, you don't need to know him... I wasn't asking about gifts such as material possessions as such... but something nice like i like the idea of the picture and letter.
Don't you think, given that he's your boyfriend, you should really try to come up with something that's personal to you both, rather than ask a bunch of strangers for generic gift ideas? It would be a lot more meaningful that way.
I'd also go for the idea of a good old fashioned letter. With one of those lipstick kisses on the bottom, or on the envelope flap. (You know, a proper "sealed with a loving kiss" type thing.) Add a little of your perfume on the letter too, it will highlight the sense of the physical connection between the two of you that you just don't get with a text message or email.
