Dame Joan Collins: The Honours system really has gone down the toilet

Ive just seen footage of this low calibre actress being made/awarded a Dame . OMG the system of Honours for the services to the community really has gone down the toilet.
I can think of quite a few people who do community jobs everyday of the week for no awards or rewards like the wee woman in my local NI Hospice Shop who does a few hours every morning as a volunteer.

For this so called actress it is a right kick in the ass for all those charity volunteers and many others who really support our communities.

I suppose its typical of the Royals and Tory party to lick the ass of the Joan Collins of this world.

I thought those in the performing industry got these awards for charitable services. Has she done much for charity or is she one of those heroic celebrities who does tons behind the scenes but 'don't like to talk about it' (some of whom genuinely don't and keep their good works relatively private).

JC is amazing for her age but was also a bit of a soft porn star in her younger years. Takes all sorts to make a world, I guess.

Nah, it went down the bog the moment that disgusting oaf James Cordon got one. From that exact point on they became absolutely meaningless.

She was awarded this honour for services to charity. So your snippy remarks about her acting OP had nothing to do with it! :p

    Well done Dame Joannie! :)

Quite simple you are entitled to nominate anyone for a honour, if you think they deserve it.

I know someone who works for the council and was nominated and award the CBE. Now here is the thing, you are expected to dress a certain way so new clothes, pay for your stay overnight yourself(so if you live outside London a hotel is a must), you pay for your scroll. The cheap one is £££ the velum version is ££££. They don't even feed you much a sandwich and cup of tea that is your lot.

So costs you loads of money and not worth the trouble is would seem.

I'd forgotten that James Cordon was also awarded an OBE.

There's a pattern here clearly, most recipients of Honours are completely self-absorbed arses.

No one else would ever accept such a thing these days.

Joan Collins is certainly worthy of her award as she supports a multitude of good causes including various AIDS, Alzheimer’s and children’s charities. She certainly knows how to stay glamorous too and looked stunning today.

    Congratulations Dame Joan.

    What a mean-spirited post. I think Joan is a well-deserved recipient.

If only honours were restricted to worthy people like Lord Archer, Sir Cyril Smith, Jimmy Savile OBE etc

Well there you go. Some don't like to shout about it. Good on her.
Non-famous people do get these honours but because they are non-famous, it's rare we hear of them. Then, of course, they have to be nominated in the first place, which is far more likely for someone in the public eye.

True, though, that far too many have been dished out to people who are undeserving but who are good at making the right noises and knowing the right people. Boo.

She got the honour for her charity work. I see no issue here.

Oh, for goodness sake grow up. Joan Colins' work for charity is well-documented and, I daresay, stretches back way further than any good deeds you may have done.

Wow, do you tell everyone whom you disagree with to 'grow up'?

I agree with the O/P; it's a farce. There are millions of people doing charity work and good deeds that go unrecognised; Collins may well donate to charity to ease her tax bill and indeed do some charity work - but IMHO does not deserve an honour.

Mind you, the whole honours system is a farce IMHO.

Oh, and forum members individual good deeds (or not) are not the topic here so that's a bit of a low blow.

I wonder how many 'normal' people who do charity work get honoured? The media only seems to focus on the celebrities getting them.

But to be fair, the media only comments on the famous ones as they're the ones the public will be most interested I suppose.

Maybe the media don't report on the non famous ones, simply because they're non famous so why would the general public need to know about this?

I imagine that ordinary people do get "honoured" it's just not commented on by the press.

I would actually prefer to see ordinary people getting awards and reading their stories. Far preferable to wheeling out and fawning over some celebrity.

In the same way I prefer watching the Pride of Britain awards to the Brits or Baftas - a bunch of luvvies giving each other awards for just doing their jobs well.

There are at least 2,600 "honours" presented every year and only a very small proportion of those are given to celebrities. Most are given to ordinary people for work in the community.

Only people who tend to be sycophants call people dame, sir ect, they are Mr,Ms or Mrs regardless of bought titles.

Those that are given to mere plebs tend to be the bog standard OBE's not worth the cheap metal it's made off.

Anyway Dame Slack deserves it for services to abysmal acting I.e The Stud/Bitch. 😝

Something tells me those "plebs" you speak of have done more for society than you ever have.

It would be quite interesting to hear which 'ordinary' person got honoured on the same day as a celebrity.

How do you know I'm not one of those plebs who has done more than you for society who was then rewarded with a piece of tat OBE?

Honours are not and never will be a true measure of ones contributions to society, they are a piece of outdated nonsense to make certain people feel superior while fobbing off those who do good things for society who then get tatty cheap ass metal crap such as OBE's & MBE's.

No one respects a silly title that means nothing though do I respect titles such as Doctor or Proffessor as you work hard to earn them in your chosen field.

How would you address Joan Collins then? Me well I'd call her Ms Collins certainly not Dame.

I have been called far worse than a sycophant. :) In any case as I don't actually know her personally what do I have to gain? A sycophant surely attempts to gain something by using false flattery? I have never met her.

Well done Dame Joan Henrietta Collins. :):):p

While i cringed when i heard about her being a dame, she did earn it for charity so I can't look down on her for that. Good for her. But at least it wasn't for her acting. Because let's be honest, apart from Dynasty and a few cult films, she's hardly had a career like Judi Dench or Maggie Smith. She's resorted to the likes of Footballer's Wives and Benidorm in recent years.

Is it a coincidence that she's starring as the Queen in a crappy new ITV show? Just looks like the royal PR people have awarded her this bauble to benefit from the tabloid association. Incestuous numpties mutually feeding of each other.
