I read somewhere that Joan is a complete perfectionist and she didn't like the fast paced way that Y&R was shot as it left no room to do things differently or "try again" like you would with a primetime show, so she left. On Knots especially, the cast had a massive input into how things ran with the writing of their characters whereas daytime soaps are quite factory like in their production.
