Resolving Host error on all browsers (macbook pro)

I've had this all morning. Tried reboot. That worked once, for 2 mins, then back to Resolving Host and time outs.
iPad is fine off the same wifi connection (BT Infinity). I can't face calling BT so googled on iPad and suggests re-setting DNS to Google's DNS settings, which I've done.
So far so good......any downsides?
I went to System Prefs> Network> Advanced>DNS> entered 8888 or 8884.

Is this just a(nother) mac issue?! First time it's happened to me. I'm still running 10.8.5 on the laptop as haven't yet dared update to Mavericks. If that makes any difference?

    Have you rebooted the router?

Are you sure the iPad is using WiFi and not 3G?

If your MacBook was using the default DNS (belonging to your ISP) then you can hardly blame it if that DNS stops working. I've had this happen locally and I had to (temporarily) use an alternative DNS until the local one was fixed.

not sure why the iPad would be working fine/browsing fine if it was the ISP's problem? (iPad is wifi)
Anyhow so far so good on Google's DNS settings.
I dread having to get hold of BT Infinity support. So hope this works.
