Aereogramme is a recent Scottish band that has caught my ear over the last few years - sadly they have now split.
Just checked out information about them & found out that their lead singer & lead guitarist have formed a new band called The Unwinding Hours - thank you OP - first time I had heard about this.
The Proclaimers - over 20 years of classic albums
Simple Minds
Travis
Alestorm - Scottish Pirate Metal, fantastic!
Runrig - some great folks songs
Glasvegas - stunning debut album
The Hostiles - great ska punk band.
Didn't know Blue Nile were Scottish - Loved A walk across the Rooftops.
When you say you went off Simple Minds in 1983 do you mean with Sparkle in the Rain. I remember my friends bringing the album into the flat and pretending to like it. I liked 'New Gold Dream' though which is around that time too.
The Associates fronted by the late Billy Mackenzie were pretty great back in the day (the 80s).
Amazing vocalist. RIP Billy.
Another great great group I saw live once many years ago was Hue and Cry-the lead singer had the most incredible voice-filled Wembley Stadium (they where supporting Madonna).
I would have to say Simple Minds and Aereogramme.
I was in a band that played a few gigs with Aereogramme around the uk in the early 00's and I have to say great guys with a great sound.
Belle And Sebastian, JATMC, Teenage Fanclub and Franz Ferdinand would all be up there, and hopefully Twin Atlantic and Tommy Reily will be too one day.
I was going to point out that a lot of the time, when people say "best scottish band" often it could as easily be "best Glaswegian band" for all the difference it makes.
