I love the sliced tongue from Tesco deli but its usually pork tongue which can be a bit salty. Ox tongue is nicer but they don't often have it,
They were selling off the 200g tins of tongue, from £2.67 to 67p last week so got a couple. I see it's high in salt though.

But let's keep it clean. I've never tried it. The thought of it and having seen it being cooked just puts me off.
Tongue was a staple when I was a lad oop north........kind of thing you had with salad
More recently I've bougtt it for sandwiches but it's difficult to find nowadays in regular supermarkes in London
Don't fancy pig's tongue though......:o
The whole range of cold meats has changed tremendously over the last 20-30 years as we appear to have lost all the traditional British cold meats and gained all the Salami's from all over Europe
Probably not a bad swap in reality though it would be nice to occasionally find tongue or haslett
Tell me about it. I can't find potted meat for sandwiches to weigh out any longer. Used to get it in the deli in the 70's and 80's. All they point me to these days are those silly jars!
Used to like Bath Chap too but you never see it these days.
Ugh just the thought.
Never heard of Bath Chap before so I looked it up.
Pigs cheeks is that right.:o
Morrisons sell tubs of brawn and similar delicacies at the deli counter.
I've not had tongue, what's it like taste n texture wise?
Yep, coated in breadcrumbs ( you know, the bright orange sort ).
Soft texture usually and a unique taste, It's nice. Try some. Ox is nicest, pork can be salty.
normally when you buy it it's been 'pressed' and cut into thin slices so in texture and appearance it's a bit like a meatier version of ham
Is this an innuendo?
I never even knew you could buy tongue but now I'm interested to try it

you can also buy it in tins and slice it up yourself
I dare say some butchers sell it whole or by weight cut from a whole tongue but difficult to find nowadays............that's probably how Mum used to buy it when I was a lad............and probably from the Tripe Shop.......:p
My mum presses a whole tongue every Christmas.
I can remember having tongue up north in the 70s but we weren't a family who every knowingly ate salad ;-)
Salad in the 1950s and 1960s was pretty awful
Basically a plate of lettuce with bits of tomato, cucumber and spring onion......
lashings of Salad Cream to make it taste of something.......:D
Yup, just add lettuce, tomatoes and mustard for a loverly tongue sarnie. But for the DIY version-

Pressure cook with some seasonings, stick it in the press and voila. Some people don't seem to like it's texture though, ie it can be a bit soft like liver. I don't think I've ever had pork tongue, but saltiness might come from it having been brined.
That's also a 2016 salad for me
Is that not an acceptable salad these days?
Can't remember the last time I had a tongue up there
that's a very boring salad !
my idea of a salad now would be something like chopped tomatoes with olives, torn up napoli salami, rocket, chopped cucumber.......served in a bowl drizzled with olive oil and with crusty white bread rolls
I never eat lettuce.........had enough when I was a kid to last me a lifetime !
Pigs cheek is lovely too, properly cooked it just melts in the mouth.
I'd say that was a simple salad base. If I take a salad to work for my lunch I'll have that plus other stuff like peppers, beetroot, usually some couscous with harissa, potato salad, some nice cheese and then a couple of things like king prawns, chorizo, black pudding, mackerel etc.
