Oh dear, I'm the worst so far but it's comforting to see there are others close to my prescription which is unfortunately -17 and -18 with soft contact lenses and about -20 with glasses, although I only wear glasses for a short while at night and in the morning. I blame my big eyes for my prescription and when people say they wish they had bigger eyes, I say I'd rather have smaller eyes and better vision. I might have a contact lens implant later this year for one eye although higher prescriptions have also higher risks with these procedures hence my reluctance in the past - plus the cost.

You can get contact lens implants past -20 as it's just like a cataract operation if you want the lens removed or you can keep the natural lens and have a piggyback lens. Laser surgery, however, I think only goes up to about -14.

If I have my eye done I would go to a consultant vitreoretinal surgeon who also does contact lens implants/cataracts as they would know everything about the retina just in case of any problems.

Hello Valene, would you care to say what your ethnicity is ? I'm just curious about your degree of myopia and race / heritage / ethnicity can have quite a lot of bearing. Note : I used all three words as I have no wish to cause offence but am not sure what / if any are correct terminology :)

I'm not offended at all. I'm of Greek-Cypriot origin and my eyes are green. My son hasn't inherited my high prescription though and has only about -0.75.

I'm -6 and -6.5, still getting slightly stronger prescription every two years or thereabouts. I hope it stops getting worse.

Ah my thread has been revived, awesome

No idea why my eyesight is so bad. God only knows I've wracked my brains trying to figure it out :p

I went for my blood test today so hopefully the glucose levels will ocme back normal

Hmm I read about those exercises before but I'm skeptical tbh

Ulitmately, I don't think that anything will produce a significant positive change in my eyesight other than drastic surgery

I too read something about eye exercises a few years back. Never did any of them. Is there evidence that they work? If so, how come the optician never mentions anything I can do for eye heath. During/after a test they don't really speak apart from to administer the test, I've certainly never been given any advice on what I can do to protect my eyes or to prevent them from getting worse- is this everyone's experience of the optician?

Thanks ! I worked in an opticians for 14 years and never came across a prescription as high as yours in all that time. The highest was - 14 and that was a Jewish person. I am fascinated by how race / ethnicity affects people's eyesight and how many of them all have a tendency to short sightedness rather than long sightedness. Particularly, Chinese / Japanese / Latin peoples - they are generally very short sighted, as are people of Jewish extraction, and yet their facial characteristics couldn't be more different. My boss told me it was partly due to the shape of a persons eye sockets and how they're made genetically, but don't know really. Nice that your son hasn't inherited your prescription, as it can be such a handicap as you are probably aware. Good luck with the implant if you choose to have it :)

Would you mind if I ask a few questions....

If your eyes keep getting worse...will you eventually go blind and is there anything that you can do to help your eyes...like diet, focus etc..

My last prescription was -3.5 and -2.75 and i was told its got a lot worse so I am guessing it will be about -6.0 or something
My optician also referred me to a specialist eye clinic or something because I have a different shaped eye...basically I have really big balls lol.

    -9.75 and -10.25

Hasn't changed over the last couple of tests. Which I have annually.

I have a 'complex prescription' which means I get a free eye test and a 'voucher' towards spectacles irrespective of working or not.

Hehe, I don't have the details handy, I am very long sighted in my left eye, and my good right eye astigmatism..not a great combo and glad thicker frames are in fashion, saves on the cost of presicion thining down!

I had to go to the opticians last year with a persistent eye watering that the Dr's did nothing for, so they gave me an eye test. I had never had one, just a little check in school at primary school and I was convinced they would say I needed glasses as everyone seems to get them no matter what now.
Anyway I was shocked it was twenty, twenty. I have no problems from a distance or close up. I really didn't like the test though, asking if it was clearer or no with a red tint, it's so bloody long too!

Haha, glad it's not just me then!! Once or twice I said to her it made no difference and she pushed so I just made one up! ^_^ Seems silly, I thought she was fitting me for lenses as she was doing so much switching and stuff!

My eyes were -10 but then had cataracts so needed an operation. After the operation they went down to -1.

I see that there are adverts now for similar operations just to improve vision.

That's blimmin' great but I bet it feels weird eh

I'm around -10 in both eyes so that sounds very tempting but I wouldn't want to risk something going wrong

-9.50 in both eyes. Wear contacts because when I wear glasses I literally look like a red haired "Ugly Betty".

People called me ugly Betty at school actually. Kids are mean :(

Not quite sure, as the format Specsavers did my prescription in last time, is totally different to what's on their website, and every other eyesight prescription I've ever received from other opticians before. It's confuzzling.

    My prescription before that, in 2011, was -5.5 & -3.75, with astigmatism of -1.75 & -2.25.

Mine is around -9.75 iirc one eye is better than the other though (prob -9.50)

    Pretty bad

    what's yours?

    -10.50 & -10

-4.00 (left) and -4.75 (right), my optician says with my contact lenses I have better than 20/20 vision. I often think that when I am struggling to read the very small writing on the test that I am failing but apparently that's not the case. My eyesight has stayed the same for over 15 years now.

Astigmatism and my prescription is -3.75 and - 4.15

Just as a matter of interest does anyone else with astigmatism find they can't watch 3 D films ? They make me feel so sea sick.
