I have not seen this film only had it described to me and not much to go on.

It's about an American solider, maybe English, POW fought in the Korean or Vietnam war, kept in a bamboo cage. His nemesis was a cruel prison guard.

At some point the POW got his freedom and returns to his country, his main interest is trains or train memorabilia.

The cruel prison guard seeks forgiveness and eventually they meet and the POW forgives him.

That's it, not much to go on, anyone know the film?

Although you've identified the film, it also reminds me a bit of Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence.

Yes, I also thought the Killing Fields but none of the characters were into trains.

    Ted was spot on.

It came to me very quickly, partly because once you mentioned the interest in trains and the prisoner of war angle it was very obvious, only one movie it could have been.

I also watched it only a few months back, so it was still fairly fresh in my mind.
