Customers of T-Mobile and 02 have complained that the mobile phone network bars access to gay websites.
This includes gay websites which contain no nudity or offensive content.

What the hell is wrong with companies like this? When I worked for a local authority they had also banned any sites including the word: gay, lesbian, bisexual etc - I ain't talking porn or anything like this I'm talking news websites, LGBT related police sites etc...Once I brought this to the attention of my HR diversity department within hours access was approved for all staff.

It's very odd because I've often seen 02 supporting various gay events and advertising in the pink press
Seriously?
But why should gay people have to 'press a button' which actually isn't correct as you need to contact customer services to remove the block, what about gay people who are not out or don't feel comfortable requesting gay content to some random call centre person...
Absolutly they knew I would have case and cearly they had discriminated against gay people, why shouldn't I be able to check gay news out as it may concern me or my lifestyle...
Everyone within the workforce has the right to be treated fairly, not by making restrictions just because of my lifestlye
Talk about over the top drama, if they want to contact one of the gay businesses then i'm sure they'll just wait to use an alternative, or do like Aneechik said and get it unblocked.
Well then maybe ALL content should be barred and if your straight you will need to call T- Mobile and 02 and tell them ur straight in order for you to use the sites you like
Why not just use the same news sites as everyone else does? Surely the news is the same no matter what site you get it from. After all, news is news isn't it?
You claim to want equality yet you keep on segregating yourselves with gay this and gay that.
I'd wager you work for the council.
Every day is heterosexual news.
I always read gay news and buy gay magazines.
Straight news is soooo boring though, then again it reminds me of straight pubs boring and dull...
I find straight radio stations quite boring as well unless it's LBC which are extremely gay friendly
What a fantastic reply!
But just imagine the drama there'd be if that heterosexual 'translation' occurred.
Well you have to.Where else are you gonna find the gay budget and the gay war in Afghanistan?
Yes, just tried it on my smartphone. It comes up with context lock. I'll log in and turn it off. Occasionally there are semi-naked pictures in the adverts at the side - top off perhaps - nothing more. It's nothing you might no see on the front of a magazine or newspaper - or frankly, a billboard, or the side of a bus.
Pretty stupid of T-Mobile and O2 to put add that one.
But as you say, you log in, and turn it off.
Lovely...
If they claim it to be because of 18+ content, then they'd need to censor about 80% of the internet!
I assume that you can't run the likes of Net Nanny on a mobile phone, so what alternative would parents have to block inappropriate sites that they don't want their kids to see?
It's not just adults that use mobile phones.
What's the difference between Gay and Straight news??
But the point is they've singled out gay content.
What about videos of people getting their heard chopped off? Murders posted online? Women being fisted? Everything else...
The internet if littered with inappropriate content with just a few clicks away from being shown to anyone who searches for it.
If a kid is going to search for gay porn, then they're going to search for gay porn (says more about the kid than the internet!) and if they're going to search for straight porn, they'll search for that.
If I was a girl, T-Mobile would have to block that as well.
They use a Bluecoat I believe. It's more likely to do with the software / hardware the companies have chosen. They get the database of site categories and then would choose to block certain categories such as adult.
A lot of companies use services like Surfcontrol. Incidentally that pinknews site would be listed as news, so would come under the same policy as BBC news with Surfcontrol.

I wonder who O2 / T-mobile use? they do need to look at that.
