The british dont understand the concept that US soaps are like live plays that are paced/set similar to romance novels. Its not suppose to be realistic its a telenovela..

I think a large part of the resentment also has to do with seeing perfectly pretty looking ppl embroiled in inane plots, going about living middle class lives .There is just a disconnect there & maybe a lot of envy that just leads ppl to automatically want to switch off
Just a plea (again) to the CBS Drama Fans, please e-mail CBS as the shows are ending this month. CBS Drama are not renewing the shows, if enough people let them know how popular the shows are they might reconsider
While I think thats a good idea in theory the truth of the matter is no amount of emails is goin to change the fact the show gets low ratings.Which is the harsh truth that has brought us to this point in the first place

You are making a rather sweeping statement "The British don't understand the concept of US Soaps...." er, THE PEOPLE WHO WATCH THE SHOWS DO UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT

"A large part of the resentment..." who is resenting the shows?? People either like them or not, I reallyt cannot believe people are resenting them.....

Are you an expert on the rating system and also KNOW FOR SURE that CBS won't renew the show if enough people e-mail and express their interest in the show. I received an e-mail from CBS advising that they are reviewing the subject at the moment. Do you know something that the rest of us don't?

I can't believe that they would consider dumping the US daytime soaps. Lets face it the soaps are the only original programming the channel has to offer. All their other shows are ancient repeats that have been seen before on UK screens.

Is it any wonder they have low viewing figures at midnight? Get a clue CBS Drama.

YEAH BUT THE PPL WHO WATCH ARE OBVIOUSLY IN THE MINORITY.My post s clearly aimed and the majority that dont

When I see posts in various message boards harping about US soaps sucking because they're far-fetched & full off pretty looking ppl e.t.c I would say thats a tell tale of an individual with a built in intolerance wouldn't you..

Thats just common courtesy, better to give (viewers of the channel) hope that management are making strides to deliver the best service.Than to say "sorry but these shows are expensive to buy & ratings really suck, so we're just goin to buy cheaper stuff like homegrown shows such as FW"

I sometimes take a look at them & they are hilarious to watch but even after 15 minutes the joke wears very thin & i have to switch over. They're SO slow & badly acted (although given how many eps they produce a week i'm not surprised!).
They completely show up how superior our soaps are in every way.
I have to laugh when I look on the Sky guide and it says episode 14627..!!
I wonder has any poor sod seen every episode!

The same could be said for the british soaps, EastEnders took for ever for the Lucas reveal, just as the same way as Coronation Street took for ever for the Richard Hillman big reveal, it is called, building the story...... regarding the acting, not every actor is great but again the same could be said for the british soaps. A lot of great movie stars started on the daytime soaps.

I can't understand why people would watch something that they don't like? It is not as though they are limited in choice by the number of channels, even at midnight there are still over 100 channels to choose from!

Because watching them often means that we're genuinely off sick from work, and painfully bored!

when i said slow i meant the pace of the episode, not the length of the storyline (ie. In British soaps one event/day doesn't last for 10 episodes!!) British soaps are faster paced & generally are in half hour instalments. I did qualify my comment on the acting but you have to say that the scripts are generally appalling. At least Corrie scripts have a bit of spark (ok not all the time!) and more to the point - wit! The only humour in the US soaps is unintentional - which is why I occasionally take a look (like I said in my original post!) Even if I was a fan I don't have 5 hours a week to devote to watching one of them!
Oh and please don't get defensive - i'm only answering the OP's question. Each to their own!

I've been watching 'Days Of Our Lives' for the past few months, and it's my guilty secret - I love it! :o It's about 6 years behind, so Marlena has just been buried, but last night ended up on the Salem replica island! Even thought it;s been both silly and incredibly far-fetched, I think it's hilarious. Just a shame its on at 1am.

    The cheesy music...the hammy acting.

No thanks. It feels like I'm watching a soft porn movie.

I've been watching Days for a few weeks now and love it.

My only problem is that I find storylines are very overpowering, taking over a full episode or week of episodes on a single storyline. I love the cheapness of the sets.

I love that it's so over the top and completely unbelievable, total escapism.

The sets and the lighting are awful on the American soaps, and they never film out doors which is a great downfall. All the British and Australian soaps have their own outdoor sets and it makes them much more realistic, and the houses look more real as well.

Also, dont the American soaps only focus on more glamous/ upper class people? Whereas their British and Austrian counterparts are centred around normal working or middle class people which the vast majority of us can relate to.

People are people. Surely one can relate to another person regardless of where they come from, how much money they have or what they look like.

In saying that I'd rather watch someone like Deidre Hall from DOOL over Helen Worth from Corrie.

I'm sure most people would agree that it's easier to relate to somebody who might be in a similar circumstance to them, which boils down to class and money. Also, the stories in the UK or Aussie soaps might feel more real to people than the US ones. Sure, the US soaps are ok for some escapism but I'd much rather our own.

Which US soaps do feature mostly working class characters? I'm thinking of something which may be the soap equivalent of Roseanne. I found Roseanne quite unique as a US sitcom for the kind of characters it had.

It has always puzzled me why us Brits have never taken to US daytime soaps. I am a big fan of the 'The Young And Restless' and CBS Drama because of lack of viewers have now relegated it to midnight and we are five years behind the US pace. I know they are much more glitzy and less realistic than the UK and Australian soaps but Dallas and Dynasty were huge in the UK.

I think if viewers gave them a chance they would really enjoy them.

Dallas and Dynasty were not day time soaps they were evening soaps.

    Loved sunset beach!!!

I occasionally watch abit of bold and the beautiful but the pacing means I am soon bored. Also I swear last time i saw it they was all married to different people lol

Sunset Beach was popular over here. It would probably still be on Five if it hadn't been cancelled by NBC

I think that was the exception though, as I think UK audiences liked the tongue-in-cheek silliness of it. I think US (daytime) audiences didn't like the ironic-ness of it

as for the others B&B, Y&R, DOOL and GH, they seem to be a bit dull. Which is odd as they've had their fair share of "Terror Island" or turkey baster storylines

When I was in Australia the person who we were staying with (who was British) LOVED the Bold and the Beautiful, like would never ever miss an episode. But in my opinion it was just awful, the acting was bad, the outdoor sets looked obviously indoor, in fact all the sets just looked really "set like".

In our soaps the soaps look like real homes and real streets and real pubs.

I guess "day time" soaps never get as much funding/viewers as the evening soaps so they end up looking cheap. Along with the different acting styles of the Americans that we find hard to enjoy that's probably why?

I like some of the Australian soaps (not Neighbours or Home and Away) but the hospital one (name escapes me), which has been shown on British TV. What I can't tolerate when I've stayed in Australia are the abysmal adverts every 5-10 mins just when a storyline is getting good.

I used to watch Sunset Beach when it was on channel 5. I never missed an espisode, I loved it, even though the story lines were highly implausible, I still found it unmissable. I was well annoyed when the whole series was dismissed as Meg's dream - just like in Dallas. But hey ho, how else were they going to end it? lol.

OMG I remember Sunset Beach, I was 7 or 8 when C5 showed it and my mum used to watch it, according to her it was so bad it was good :p She said the acting was dire! lol :D

A Country Practice? That was set in a hospital IIRC. Dunno if this was a soap or drama but anyone else remember Blue Heelers, the Aussie show set in a police station?
