Hi

please can anyone recommend some nice calming soothing oils for an electric vaporiser.
I know its a matter of taste, but the shops often don't have testers. So far I am dissapointed with my chosen oils (below):

Eucalyptus smelt like TCP.
Geranium just stinks and hurts my throat.
Lavender is OK, but is getting boring.

*You cant use citrus oils.

Many thanks

    Sandalwood
    Frankincense
    Ylang Ylang
    Chamomile
    Patchouli

That should do you for a start - they're all quite strong though!

Fragrance is such a personal thing, but you might want to try rosemary :)

We always used Rosemary as part of a stimulant blend rather than being relaxing. Quite a nice smell though.

Thanks. I was considering rosemary or frankincense.
I just felt that over £12 for 10ml of frankincense sounded expensive, especially as I have no idea what it smells like.

It's quite a deep, balsamy smell - difficult to describe really and I agree, it's not cheap if you then hate it!

Rosemary is more herby but is a stimulant rather than being calming.

Rose might be another option, although that is generally expensive as well.As least you know what that smells like!

I wouldn't say that any of the ones that have been mentioned are particularly medicinal in smell. Rosemary probably the most due to its herbiness (is that a word?)

Vetiver is another possibility although it seems to be a bit of a 'marmite' oil - you either love it or hate it (I don't like it, but doesn't mean you wouldn't!)

A great book if you are into aromatherapy - The Fragrant Pharmacy. Can't remember the full name of the author, think it might be Wildwood or Wormwood surname. Inspires you to use oils more in everyday life. Sorry for the hijack but anyone clicking on this thread might be looking for a book!

I would be tempted to try blending the oils you have already have. I don't like geranium on its own but often use it with lavender. You can change the proportions to alter the smell too. Also Eucalyptus can benefit from a little lavender.

Sometimes blending essential oils can really change the smell.

Thanks for the book suggestion. I've only just started buying oils since a life changing event recently took place that led me to look into oils in the hope I could create a calming ambience in the home.

Also, thanks for the suggestion of mixing the oils I already have. I will that tonight.

Another vote for sandalwood. I am not sure if 'essential' oils only cover certain types of oils, however me and my ex boyfriend once had a lovely 'green tea' oil for our oil burner. It was our absolute favourite but we'd never been able to replace it (I think he got it from overseas). We also had quite a nice tangerine one. I think they were our favourites - he had about 20 different types!

I'm sure you can 'smell' the oils in a lot of shops - perhaps try going to one that allows you to so that you know what you're getting. There is also a market here (in Bristol) which sells a massive array of oils - more than you might get in some shops - and/or you might find it beneficial to visit a specialist shop (e.g. we have a few aromatherapy shops around) for advice or more choice. I'm not sure where you are shopping at the moment but it might be worth trying another place, especially to try before you buy :-)

My OH managed to pour boiling water on his hand yesterday. He was convinced he was going to get blisters. Two applications of lavender oil and all you can see is a faint red patch. My OH thinks oils and the like are bunkum but even he thinks that lavender oil is a miracle worker! Love essential oils.
