Why should anyone have to run the gauntlet of that lot
My nephew, ex-Army (REME) used his HGV licence after service to get a lorry driving job.
He has now given up that job and become a Brit-based white van man, saying Calais is worse than a run from Camp Bastion.
Why should anyone have to run the gauntlet of that lot
No-one - they are not wanted here in Kent (or anywhere else in England) but some 22managed to make it today. Where are they now? Probably all claiming they are under the age of 18!
They have over months (and longer) proved themselves to be violent and should all be rounded up by the French and sent back to where they came from or, if found to have been part of the mobs threatening lorry drivers and destroying lorries and contents, not to mention the tunnel and fences, they should be charged by the French and put in jail.
It is time that this great so called European 'Union' pulled together but it is too late now and I just long for that vote to get out of it all (which I voted no to way back in '75).

Police Boss: Migrants Enter Europe To Steal, Traffic Drugs – But Our Courts Won’t Punish Them Although the crime wave brought with the migrant crisis is rarely discussed in Germany for fear of giving offence, and least of all by police officers who are bound to political neutrality, police chief superintendent Bundesschriftführer Rüdiger Seidenspinner has broken ranks to speak out about the problem. http://www.breitbart.com/london/2015/11/26/police-boss-criminals-entering-europe-steal-traffic-drugs-courts-wont-punish/
Migrants Arriving in Germany Face a Chaotic Reception in Berlin BERLIN — On a stretch of sidewalk in Germany’s capital, migrant families huddle under blankets, their eyes locked on a tall metal gate. Helpers in bright yellow vests hand out steaming cups of tea to ward against the cold.
Why does France allow such thugs to remain? Round them up and ship them where ever they came from. There should be a resounding message, can't behave, can't stay.

Refugees in winter
Icy reception - The journey through Europe is miserable for migrants. It is likely to get worse During the onset of winter the number of migrants making the perilous journey across the Mediterranean normally drops. This year has been different. In October 2014, 23,000 people made the crossing; this October it was over 220,000—higher than the total for all of last year. Although numbers fell at the start of November, they are still around ten times higher than in 2014 (see chart). Yet as temperatures drop and migrants continue to stream in, Europe’s response has been hopelessly inadequate. After the terrorist attacks in Paris on November 13th, it may get even worse. http://www.economist.com/news/europe/21679258-journey-through-europe-miserable-migrants-it-likely-get-worse-icy-reception
German Companies Mainly See Refugees as Unskilled Workers German companies see the greatest employment potential for refugees as unskilled workers. These are the results of a survey by the Ifo Institute published on Thursday
<snip> It is worth highlighting that 92 percent of survey participants cited a lack of language skills as a barrier to employment. 71 percent cited a lack of qualifications, while 59 percent mentioned labour law requirements and 32 percent reported the minimum wage as a constraint. http://www.cesifo-group.de/ifoHome/presse/Pressemitteilungen/Pressemitteilungen-Archiv/2015/Q4/press_20151126_sd22_fluechtlinge.html
A Dutch high court on Thursday upheld a government policy of withholding food and shelter to rejected asylum-seekers who refuse to be repatriated, giving legal backing to one of Europe's toughest immigration policies.
The Raad van State or Council of State, which reviews the legality of government decisions, found that the new policy of conservative Prime Minister Mark Rutte does not contravene the European Convention on Human Rights.
A rejected asylum seeker does not have the right to appeal to the European Social Charter, it said.
The Dutch government "has the right, when providing shelter in so-called locations of limited freedom, to require failed asylum-seekers to cooperate with their departure from the Netherlands," a summary of the ruling said.
Germany’s economy minister has said the country’s minimum wage will not be lowered for migrants because of the refugee crisis.
Senior economists had suggested that the 8.5-euro-an-hour wage be brought down for refugees whose qualifications don’t match European standards: the theory being that they would be able to find jobs more easily.
But Sigmar Gabriel booted the idea into touch.
“Doing that would send a signal, it would mean playing off the poor who come here against the poor who are already in the country. That is why we cannot accept these claims. Nothing will change over that matter, ladies and gentlemen,” the economy minister told parliament.
A document said to have been leaked from Germany’s Federal Employment agency says more than 80 percent of migrants entering the country this year have no qualifications, contradicting claims that many are educated professionals who can contribute to the economy.
The figures have been interpreted as suggesting that hundreds of thousands of migrants and refugees will go straight into unemployment benefits.
The lorry drivers obviously know when (or at least suspect) that migrants have clambered aboard. Is there not an area for lorry drivers to go to for the police or whoever to give the vehicle a quick once over?

If there isn't, there should be. And arrest and charge any found to have caused damage.

At the port itself yes, but it's not efficient at "busy" times..That's how concerned they really are. The only long term solution is to send them all straight back to Calais as soon as they're discovered in the UK and force the French to deal with what is their own problem and nothing to do with the UK. . http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-33267137
The first official port barrier is a French security checkpoint where passports are scanned.
Mr Fleming told the BBC lorries then move on to be either X-rayed or tested with a monitor which detects any heartbeats on board. He says all lorries are checked at quiet times, but it becomes a "lottery" when the port is busy because staff cannot process vehicles fast enough.
Lorries then have documents checked by UK border staff and must also pass a customs checkpoint before driving on to a ferry.
The port also has roving patrols of security guards with dogs and carbon dioxide detectors - which can detect raised levels caused by people breathing in the lorries.

Anatomy of a Crisis: Not all migrations are treated equal
An Essay by Przemysław Roguski
Europe is back in crisis mode. After the Eurozone debt crisis, the standoff with Russia over Ukraine and the third Greek bailout, Europe faces yet another challenge: hundreds of thousands of people streaming into the European Union in search of refuge, jobs and a better life. In what has now become a familiar pattern, we see calls to action, extraordinary summits and recriminations between member states, followed by more calls for unity etc. We also see the media hunting for the most powerful image to depict the crisis and finding it, depending on their views, in the tragic death of Aylan Kurdi, a Kurdish boy from Syria who drowned in the Aegean Sea on his way to Greece, or in the pictures of ungrateful refugees throwing away food distributed by the Hungarian authorities.

Nationalistic need, greed and cruel exploitation, wasting vast amounts of money in Europe, making millions of people suffer where that money is needed as a result, autocratic decisions and demands, lack of cooperation and consultation between member states, lack of any real and functioning asylum policy, lack of functioning external border controls, endless weeks apart committee meetings to decide on anything at all etc etc etc. The list is endless. What could possibly go wrong.................

Too many of them, I suppose. They need the manpower to defend the motorway.
I suppose they do not want a full scale riot given that the camps cover a wide area

BERLIN — On a stretch of sidewalk in Germany’s capital, migrant families huddle under blankets, their eyes locked on a tall metal gate. Helpers in bright yellow vests hand out steaming cups of tea to ward against the cold.
Beyond that gate, in the courtyard of a complex of stately brick buildings in an up-and-coming Berlin neighborhood, is Germany’s version of Ellis Island — a clearing point for hundreds of new arrivals who gather long before dawn to submit their asylum applications.
