Why are they to refereed being "separatists" weren't they Russian's who came over the boarder masquerading as such? And it was obviously them they've been gloating about shooting down Ukrainian military planes for the last two weeks.
Shooting down a commercial airliner, although by mistake, is a massive own goal for their cause.
They are Ukrainians of Russian ethnicity who want to break away from the Ukraine nation state. They are given moral, and allegedly military support from Russia.
I read that their leader has a love of re-enacting Roman, Napoleonic and 20th Century battles

Yes it's widely accepted many Russians are in that part of Ukraine, but many of those fighting will also be officially Ukrainian citizens, although Russian speaking ones hence they are usually referred to as separatists, because their cause is to separate that part of Ukraine from Kiev control, and to probably follow Crimea to become part of Russia.
Would anyone on the East cost fly via Europe to Asia. Surely it would be cheaper going via the pacific.
Not necessarily. Also, a flight from NY, Boston etc to Asia over the Pacific is a very long flight - about 16 hours non-stop. Many in the east coast prefer to break up the flight with a stopover in Europe.
You would assume if this was an act by Russian separatists, the West would have to take some major action now.
It is quite shameful that the situation started to slip to the background as is sadly usual. The foreign office and USA had stopped talking about the situation because ISIS came along.
There was a journalist at the Psaki press conference who only seemed concerned that his American citizens would be without their Kalashnikov semis if his government enforced sanctions on the company.
That's the other thing which has been said, that the MH17 route wasn't usually over the war zone, but they went that way because of a thunder storm! Beasty result!:(
Probably an inexperienced radar operator using educated guesses and guessed wrong.
Seems the plane was sending it's normal location signals, which ATC systems and major military systems can pick up and distinguish commercial flights from military flights. But reportedly the BUK system can't pick up those signals, and it's radar would only report that a plane was within range.

More options via any of the European hub airports - and overall flight times aren't that much different. One of the cheapest routes to KUL from NY is via Heathrow and it's only an hour or so longer than the "direct" route

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has cleared up the confusion about whether the space in which MH17 was open to civilian planes.
“Based on the information currently available it is believed that the airspace that the aircraft was traversing was not subject to restrictions,” said a statement on the IATA website.
It is not unusual for civilian planes to fly over warzones, providing that they remain at an altitude at which they are unlikely to be hit by the weapons used in the conflict.

Also the separatists wouldn't necessarily know the airways in the area.
This makes me not want to fly on any Malaysia plane ever
Do you know who you're flying with?
Book an all in holiday and you could be flying with anyone. Many airlines are also in together. Isn't KLM with Air France? I get flying points from both.

RT's take on it.
Our macho hero is saved. What a smokescreen.>:( One way or another, the separatists have been receiving some nice kit from over the border to counter the Ukraine's more sophisticated weapons. I can't help but think that before it became apparent that they'd hit a commercial airline, some idiots were jumping up and down thinking they'd got a Ukrainian military plane.
If it was at 30-40k feet then it would have been shot down by a major anti aircraft system rather than a guy with a hand held launcher as they don't have the range to hit it.
Comments
As either way takes approx the same time, then fares would probably be similar.

No IFF for the Buk to discern...

What a douchebag.

But speaking from Brasilia on Thursday, the latest stop on a Latin American tour and site of a summit of Brics emerging market leaders, Putin denied the report and said Russia had no plans to resume the Lourdes signals intelligence facility.
I don't think any normal person will take anything Putin's propaganda network says remotely seriously

Oh! It's Sweet_Princess.
Gaaaaagh!!!!
Perhaps RT believes Putin is so awesome he can be in several places at once.
They only said his plane...they didn't say him, I would imagine he would have more than one plane, like there is more than one Air Force One.
Not saying I buy the story, but they have been careful with the wording.

Do the sepratists have this tech ?
