Warning: A picture of the mural is included.
A controversial painting that depicts a smiling vagina on a staircase has been allowed to remain at a Swedish high school but will now be obscured by a wall instead.

The artwork by Carolina Falkholt sparked a fierce debate over censorship, after it was announced that the mural would be on display at a junior high school in Nyköping, eastern Sweden.

Following months of debate over the suitability of the location for the mural, the school's corridors are populated by 13-to 15-year-olds, a compromise has now been reached.

Instead of painting over the mural as was previously suggested, it will now be covered up a wall.

... the news has not gone down well with the mural's creator Falkholt.

"I'm shocked. All the students know what kind of painting is under there," she said to the newspaper.

An unusual story, to be sure. Imagine the headlines if this was in a British school. "Ban these filthy murals!" comes to mind.

"The painting had earlier got a respite after the Nyköping municipality said they would paint over the artwork last January. A social media backlash then ensued prompting the municipality to back off, at least temporarily. "

in sweden social media is used to prevent censorship. in the uk the outraged in society (of which there are many here) on social media would be the ones responsible for it getting censored

We're missing the bigger picture here:

We have a real gift in the UK of seeing smut and a dirty titter in most art so nothing new to see here.
Looks like a grumpy old Ram.

Well, that's the first time I've seen all the words "smiling", "vagina" and "mural" all in the same sentence.

After the new wall was put up, I'd just simply paint a new version on the new wall.

I thought every time something like this was brought up Sweden is often used as a example of how liberal places can be about things like this.

People often says it's normal to answer your door naked or walk around your garden naked where anyone could see you.

    It's grossly exaggerated:

    http://www.thecommentator.com/article/4481/swedish_parliament_removes_baroque_artist_s_bare_breasted_painting_for_offending_feminists_and_muslims
A nude painting named Juno, which was painted by baroque artist G E Schröder and has hung in the dining room of the Swedish Parliament for 30 years has been taken down for fear of offending the sensitivities of feminists and Muslim visitors, Swedish newspaper, The Local reported on Thursday.

Explaining the ban on the baroque breasts, a source from the parliament said: "You have to think of the foreign guests, especially those from Muslim countries."

The deputy speaker of Sweden's parliament, Susanne Eberstein, also a prominent Social Democrat, added:

"I think it is more a feminist issue. It's tiresome (looking at) a bare-breasted woman when I sit at public dinners with foreign guests. I think it feels a little hard to sit there with men who look at us women."

Exactly the point I was going to make - People queue up to tell us that Europe is some giant steam room and it is only stuffy old Englishers that are hung up about bums and tits and the like...
