Does it annoy you when people use American words?

For example instead of saying rubbish bin they say trash can etc? I know someone who gets really annoyed by this so I do my best to use as many American words as I can:kitty:

Ooh what are you like SuperDude!!

It depends. There are people who seem to think speaking like that sounds 'cool' or 'sophisticated' when it often doesn't.

I had a manager once from Hemel Hempstead who was desperate to sound American and only spoke in American business English. It was actually hard work speaking to him as I recall. He sounded a right idiot!!

Why should anyone get worked up by the gradual evolving of our language? It's always happened and always will.

No it doesn't annoy me at all.

    Aloooooominum is actually my favourite.

    And Zee instead of Zed.

No, it doesn't annoy me. It does amuse me, though. I do fell rather ashamed, though, because it's not right to mock the afflicted.

:D Oh, I came on here just hoping someone had said aloooominum. I go out of my way to say it any chance I get, in my best US accent (and by best I mean awful) especially for my husband. He flinches.

I also love Faynneee Pack. Using the f word to describe a lady's front bottom makes me heave but I love, love, love fanny pack.

I'm not content with Americanisms. I now steal Chinesisms and Japanesisms.

    "Do the math"

Love saying that just to wind people up.

I haven't heard anyone using Americanisms since primary school.

Children are easily influenced by American films and TV shows, so it was to be expected and never annoyed me.

If I heard a grown-up using Americanisms, I'd just assume that they were trying too hard and give them a wide berth.

Reminds me of a photo sent into Viz where a reader had seen a translation in Japan or somewhere of 'toilet paper' as 'fanny napkin' :o:D
