most people I asked about it havent heard of it and one of them is a top movie reviewer!
Well in that case i'm inclined to believe that they aren't a top movie reviewer...i find it very hard to believe that someone who is within the movie industry and is paid to watch films wont have at least heard of Pacific Rim...
The film isn't a sequel,reboot,comic-book or based on a well known fantasy novel. So spending $180 million on it will be a risk. A big star name - sometimes can help,
Roland Emmerich is the only director i can think of who can spend that much money ( or more ) on an original plot and get a profit.
The problem with Transformers was not the big fighting robots. It was just a bad film by a bad director. I don't know whether Pacific Bay is any good, but I do rate the track record of Guillermo del Toro way above Michael Bay. del Toro can do special effects and big set pieces, but he can also do dialogue and character.

That's not true at all. Not every movie has hype and there are more important movies out that they would prefer to review.
I'm sorry but I agree with CJClarke as a top movie reviewer should have heard of this film as they have been showing trailers in the cinema and on tv constantly for the last few months. So unless this top movie reviewer doesn't go to the cinema then they would be aware of this film!
I'm actually really looking forward to Pacific Rim but I can see why people think it might flop as it might not be to everybody taste.Even if it flop doesn't mean it can't be a good film as Dredd last year flopped but it was a really good film!
I have no idea what you guys are talking about. Guillermo Del Toro, monsters and robots. Sign me the f**k up baby! Don't give a shit about box office numbers. Batman and Robin was a box office hit... Go figure!

Point us in the direction of this "top movie reviewer" then?
As Motthus says, they've been showing the Pacific Rim trailers in cinemas for at least 3 months now, it's been in front of pretty much every film i've seen apart from Despicable Me 2 (because it was U rated, so obviously not suitable), and it's been on the trailer reel on IMAX screens since before Christmas. Plus, now that the TV trailers have really started to ramp up over the last couple of weeks i just can't believe for one second that anybody who considers themself a "top movie reviewer" wouldn't at least be aware that the film exists, not to mention that any movie reviewer worth their salt would surely know about the new film from Guillermo Del Toro...
I just hope there is more to this movie than big robots and monsters knocking seven bells out of each other. As exciting as that may be in short bursts, like the transformers over-the-top, tedious bouts of destruction and mayhem.
As exciting as such sequences look in trailers, they soon become wearisome when they are thrown at you every 10 minutes over the course of a 2 hour film.
Sadly, a lot of filmmakers seem to have lost the knack of leaving audiences wanting more, now the opposite is true...beat audiences into submission with mind-numbing action scenes every few minutes.
A giant man robot beating some weird alien with a oil tanker, what's not to like?
But it has to have more than that...a cool moment or two is not going to sustain a whole movie.
I guess the dilemma here is whether we are going to get something quite different quirky and special considering the track record of the director, or whether GDT has not exactly sold out/taken the money and ran, but perhaps indulged his geekish schoolboy fantasies for big robots and monsters, and spent a ton of money on a vanity project.

GDT appears to have integrity. Apparently he was offered double the final budget of Pan's Labyrinth in English. But chose to make it in Mexico/Spain and take no salary in order to avoid studio interference. And thankfully he did, imo Pan's Labyrinth is one of the best films ever made.
Movies should make a impact before there release most people I asked about it havent heard of it and one of them is a top movie reviewer!
WOW. Just wow. This such utter UTTER nonsense I can barely believe anyone could have written it. A top movie reviewer doesn't know about Pacific Rim... Who does he write for: the Tellytubby Gazette?
Pacific Rim has been in the 2013 most anticipated movies in just about every poll, review and editorial for the past six months; it's been impossible to miss (certainly for a 'top movie reviewer' who really should know about important upcoming releases).
The advertising has been everywhere online, having been spoon fed in just the right amounts for a year and right now, it's just reaching fever pitch. I've seen a bunch of adverts for this movie and I hardly watch any TV...
I think PR will do really well. It all depends on what the critics and the public think. Not long to go now.
fwiw I haven't seen a single advert for this, not even a hint of it when I went to see Man of Steel opening weekend. I only know what it is through geeky movie site channels (and it doesn't really interest me at all so far, I've never been a sucker for big rock'em sock'em robot type affairs).

Very much this.

The Lone Ranger is going to be this summers BIGGEST FLOP

Exactly what I said when I saw that trailer

I've got tickets to see a preview screening next Saturday morning, courtesy of Sky.
I'm sure it will be a corny as hell "God bless the USA" CGI-fest, but it could be quite good with Guillermo del Toro directing.
Maybe people in far away lands are not bored of films aimed at teenage boys just yet.
