That reads as 'how to temporarily postpone a disaster'.

The key Microsoft word being 'temporary'. User control being a temporary thing.
It is the same for all future impositions coming our way.

There should be a way at least to block drivers.

Yes, but it does read that it stays in place until a new driver exists (or updated fix).

So surely you would want to give the newer driver a chance, because the software developers would only have updated the driver in order to improve it.

It's difficult to give a driver a chance when your computer won't boot because of it.

I was messing with DriveTheLife yesterday, which is perhaps worth a look, but it did BSOD with my HDMI driver update. I forced it through in Safe Mode and found I had a non-bootable computer.

Since I had made a Restore Point beforehand, it was easily resolved, but these dodgy Windows Updates do cause problems for many.

No, you are describing a permanent stop, any fix being brand new newly numbered update.

    The word is temporary.

Does it matter that it was/is intented as a temporary fix? Surely what matters is if the Show or Hide Updates Troubleshooter Package is going to be withdrawn or is somehow going to be disabled in the future for those who have already downloaded it.

Microsoft can do whatever they wish, but at this moment it is difficult to see how they could withdraw or disable the feature and have a million users all going on social media - on the same day - to report that the incompatible driver that was hidden 8 months ago has suddenly re-appeared and has now screwed up their fun/study/daily life/porn consumption/small business.

If your comment was not about this issue.......My profuse apologies for quoting your post!

I don't know what they think was wrong with update Tuesdays. Updates for W10 became frantic and apparently buggy. To me it looks as if they changed their testing strategy as well. Let the users discover the bugs and we'll fix them quickly. If it is so it will destabilise the OS. How can one write a robust and reliable programme if they don't know if they are dealing with their own bugs or Microsoft's..

We all know that you needed to update 7 and /8.1 with zillions of updates to be able to install 10 via the auto upgrade method.

We soon learnt to use the media creation tool.

What I did not realise (and only just found out - maybe this is common knowledge but escaped me) is that apparently you do not have to do all the updates when using the media creation tool!

On other forums, people claim thus works fine.

MS have never made this clear!

For those of the Tin Hat Order...........You may find some solace in the following...
How to stop Windows 10 tracking and spying.

Not much point in upgrading, if you implement that lot....:o

I prefer a titanium hat - a lot lighter but very impermeable - costs more than the PC though!

But all that lot is not really needed to run software at the end of the day, so if people want to update and stop the tracking they can, that is if the software do stop it all, but I doubt it does.

you said Not much point in upgrading, if you implement that lot... I meant that you do not need all those feature that will be disabled to run software. So it is not going to stop windows doing it primary function which is to allow you to run software of your choice.

However it is only the comments that tackle the privacy and user control pertinence.

Most of these tech sites (especially American ones) are in the pocket of Microsoft and wouldn't dare to upset them by mentioning Windows 10's data harvesting and invasions of privacy, if they did they wouldn't get 'exclusive previews' of MS's latest whatever and it would hurt their ad revenue

They aren't trying to inform, they are trying to make money which is why their opinions can't be fully trusted

I used the O&O app called Shut Up 10 to disable virtually all the tracking features, only thing I left active was windows update.

I just turned off what I didn't want using the built in on/off toggles. Then turned off the telemetry in services.

But why you so worried about it.

    Just by using a credit/debit card you're being tracked/watched.
Buy something in a supermarket and use a loyalty card, same thing.

drive you're car, cameras track you across the UK.

Use you're mobile and you're habits are logged.

    Got a passport?

So stop worrying about a OS on you're pc.
Embrace the technology, start using it to just enjoy life and not worry about life.

I do not normally use a debit card and I don't have a credit card. I normally pay by cash.

I don't drive, not much I can do about cameras unless I hide my face all the time, but thankfully there are still some places I can go that don't have cameras.

You have got me there I must admit

Nope and have not had one for years, in my last one i did not even change my address when i moved as it was so close to running out.

So just go with the flow and follow the crowd then?
Thankfully i am not like that and don't change just because some big company want to make more money.

I do enjoy life, even if today have been a bit crap.

... which all adds ups to say that frankly, you are a little odd. That's fine; I used to teach IT courses and quite a few of my students were a bit weird and anti social. Maybe that's why they are attracted to IT.

What it means though is that you can't expect to come to a forum like this, express your somewhat unique views on privacy, and expect people to agree with you. Of course you are entitled to your opinion on privacy issues and on Windows 10 in general, but there is no need to go on about it. If you continue to criticise Windows 10 when you say that you have no intention to use it, that just makes you sound like a troll, which I'm sure you don't want.

Yes, Mr Moderator. As if dislike or criticism of Windows 10, particularly those from experience, shouldn't be discussed on a Windows 10 thread...

noise747's opinion might be considered a bit "tin foil", but I do think he raises some valid points, even if I don't subscribe to all of them. Even if he's wrong, his opinion is one that needs to be dealt with by informed debate, in which we can all learn from.

I have mostly lurked on this thread and learnt a bit more from the to and fro about Windows 10. I haven't myself installed Windows 10 yet and am still to make up my mind if I will do so in future, but I have had to deal with my mother's machine which did have Windows 10 (before she got fed up and wanted me to revert it). So, what seems like a waste of breath for some can be informative for others.

How long does it take to install?

I've started the process and just can't sit here all day waiting for it to move on from 'working on it'!

    For goodness sake.

Well, from my mother's experience when she upgraded and some comments on the Net from others that have upgraded, it should take about one to two hours. Obviously, this will depend on your machine's specs, etc. It won't take all day, though.
