I think I've figured out what bothers me about "app". I see the word as a written abbreviation, like "approx" or "Prof". No one actually says out loud: "It takes approx two minutes" or "I like Prof Stephen Hawking". Same deal with "app". It's just written shorthand.
Also, I think there is just something more civilised, mature and balanced about "application", while "app" seems more like a kind of caveman grunt or animal noise. "Me eat food. Me use app."
I'm pretty sure Apple have always referred to software as apps or applications. I think Microsoft always referred to them as programs in Windows up until they released Windows 8.
