We have so few of the 70s companions left now. It's strange; I think we've only lost a couple of the 60s companions, but there's really only Katy, Louise and Lalla left of the 70s. I hope they're all with us for many years to come, and Tom too. Poor Tom, that's another old friend gone. And sympathies most of all to her family.
I think you mentioned after Caroline John's death how weird it is that a lot of the 60's companions are still going and the 70's ones are sadly falling by the wayside. It really is quite extraordinary and as you say, fingers crossed they continue for many more years.

echoed.

I think we should all keep bumping Listentomes above post right into next year, in the hope that someone on the production team hears about it.

If I'm honest she wasn't my favourite Doctor Who character - as a child I found her a bit aloof and cold. But I remember her in a thriller around the same time - "The Assassination Run" with Malcolm Stoddard - which more than made up for it !

Very sad news at that age.

Mary Tamm only appeared on Doctor Who for one season, but she established the character of Romana — a member of the Doctor's own race, who travels around with him on the quest for the Key to Time.

Romana was the Doctor's first traveling companion who could lay claim to being his intellectual equal — even if she didn't have the same level of real-life experience. And Tamm had the unenviable task of going head to head with Tom Baker, challenging the authority of the most authoritative of Doctors. There were smart, independent companions before Tamm's Romana — but she was the first who could accuse him of flying the TARDIS the wrong way. (Just watch the opening scenes of "The Pirate Planet," and it's obvious how Steven Moffat drew on Tamm's version of Romana for River Song.)

And as Alun.Vega points out on Twitter, Tamm also livened up Doctor Who quite a bit, adding a twinkling, knowing sort of humor. Her version of Romana was often capable of laughing at the situation just as much as the Doctor — just in a more dry, sardonic fashion.

Really sad. I love the Key To Time season and Romana 1 is probably the main reason. Love her commentaries too, which shows me that someone that stunning can be just as likeable too.

How sad. And I've never even seen her yet!
What I mean is - her one and only series 'Key To Time' is the only full season I never got to see. I used to see pictures of her in the papers...and I remember thinking she looked a bit posh to be an assistant!
I'd just started work in a hotel - and Saturdays were a late finish! No video in those days!
I've kept meaning to buy the Box Set.....that's a must now!!!

As nice as Mary Tamm looked, the time she joined Dr Who was the time it went downhill, IMO-although not because of her.

I remember Lalla Ward commenting in another DVD (possibly Creature from the Pit), that Mary "could do glamour standing on her head".

That is perfectly true.
