Some news for Ole Einar Bjoerndalen fans - he's announced today that he won't be retiring at the end of the season as widely predicted. Instead he is going to go on until the World Champs on Oslo in 2016! Not sure if it's a good idea, personally, he risks getting a bit of egg on his face,
Sadly the season is dragging to its end, but there's still a few things going on.
Alpine World Cup Finals from Lenzerheide, Switzerland
Cross-Country Skiing season end mini-Tour from Falun
Nordic Combined finals from Falun
Ski Flying (ie ultra big hill jumping) from Harrachov, Czech Republic
Biathlon from Kontiolahti, Finland- still another week to go after this one!
Ski Cross from Are, Sweden
Curling women's World Champs also streaming only. Annoyingly, coverage for practically every draw is a match involving China, so it's clear who is paying the bills. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lByalN0JOBQ
Some better news for Elise Christie after her long train of disasters in Sochi. At the Short-Track World Champs in Montreal, she managed to make the finals in all four of her solo events, and won the silver in the 500m, 4th in the 1000, 5th in the 1500 and 7th in the 3000. The Team GB men's squad took bronze in the relay. Such a shame she never got to show her true form in Sochi.
Ah well, the sad day comes with the last official weekend of the Winter Sports World Cup year. I'm going to have to find something else to do on weekend afternoons.
The last few things are:
Ski Jumping/Flying from Planica, Slovenia
Biathlon World Cup from Oslo
FreeStyle Skiing from La Plagne, France and Silvaplana, Switzerland
From Wednesday next week, the Figure Skating World Champs from Japan
After that, Ice Hockey continues until the World Champs in Belarus in May, and there is the Men's Curling World Champs in Beijing beginning on 29 March.
A perfect last weekend to the biathlon season - 3 women's races all of which went right to the wire and the whole season came down to the final shoot of the last race. I'll have to look out for streams of the Norwegian national champs next week and the Moscow event the week after. The Moscow event is an invitational stadium race, along the same lines as the race at the Schalke stadium in between Christmas and New Year - it was put on YouTube last year.
In spite of a long series of injuries, bad luck, lack of funding and support she has been Britain's greatest ever Alpine skier. Although she never got any really big wins or medals, in terms of the number of World Cup points won and consistent Olympic finishes we have never had anyone else remotely at her level.
Another amazing post-season result. Andrew Musgrave came 5th in the Norwegian National 50km Championships. Combined with his win in the Norwegian National Sprint Championships back in January, and other results, this means that he has become the overall Norwegian National Champion! Just a shame that he did not manage to time his two season peaks with the Olympics.
I think it was probably over-training. He seems to be one of those guys who needs a coach who's firm enough to tell him to back off, otherwise he would be out there all day. In Norway he competes for a local club, so probably has more experienced coaches.
A late revival for this thread - the GBR ice hockey team take on Croatia tomorrow, We are currently in Division One B, and the target is to get promotion up to Division One A. The other teams in the group are Lithuania, Croatia, Romania, Netherlands and Poland.
Subscription, huh? Thanks but no thanks - how to get your sport out to prospective new fans...put it behind a paywall (and one that isn't too easy to penetrate). Hmmmph. >:(
Just one last dying gasp...the Ice Hockey World Champs starting in Minsk, Belarus this weekend - the Stanley Cup play-offs are still going on, so presumably the USA and Canada will be under strength.
