A Trial You Likely Haven't Read About

For the last eight weeks, the trial of Colonel Kumar Lama a serving officer of the Nepalese Army who lives in UK has been going on at the Old Bailey. The verdict is expected next week.

He is being tried under Section 134 of the Criminal Justice Act, a law that defines torture as a universal jurisdiction for the alleged torture of two men arrested during Nepal's civil war.

There aren't any reporting restrictions in place so it's either a case of the media deciding not to report it, or simply a lack of interest on the part of the media.

Probably not that many members of the public would be interested either.

Not in anyway downplaying the seriousness of what is alleged, but because it concerns a foreigner committing acts against non UK citizens in another country, during a little known about civil war, there just isn't the mileage for any public interest.

Here is a link to the ongoing issue.

    Jury couldn't agree.
According to the BBC, a re-trial is being considered.

My guess is that there will not be another trial, one at the beginning of last year had to be abandoned/adjourned half-way through because of lack of qualified interpreters, they don't come cheap.

Another trial will be too expensive, it's already very likely to have cost millions.

So, how did you read about it originally?

Well it's got to be asked, if what blueblade wrote is correct:-

Then why is the British taxpayer having to stump up for these proceedings, sounds like he should have been shipped off to the ICC in the Hague for them to deal with him.

I think it's unrealistic to expect that pain and suffering are avoided during a bloody civil war.
