This way I cut out a lot of rubbish which otherwise would have appealed. Try it folks. Its a foolproof plan.

If I followed this principal, I would've missed out on a gr8 many films!

One mans rubbish could be another mans gold... Don't limit yourself to ratings on that website!;-)

So you need to be told what is good then? I suppose it beats having to use your brain and deciding for yourself.

Its my IMDB mantra and it works for me. It was just a little nugget of advice and has stopped me from watching terrible films which I was doing previous to the mantra's inauguration

I'm testing this theory and so far I'm finding the opposite to other posters. I wouldn't have missed anything good(imo) so far but would have had to sit through 'Lawrence of Arabia' :)

Out of interest, what films do people think are great that score less than 6.5?

Edit: I take it all back. 'Six days seven nights' (5.7) :o I love that film.

It's a seductive idea but I don't think you can rely on ratings in practice.
    Entertainment is very subjective.
That said the last great film I found was Redbelt (rated 6.8)

Who cares? The point is not to give a flying f*ck what IMDB says in the first place. Try that for a mantra.

And who in Hell said IMDB was a reliable barometer anyway?

There's some right old shit in the Top 250 for a start, and as for the forums...

Sometimes the rubbish movies can be more fun
I have a soft spot for the awful Garbage Pail Kids for one thing.

I used to love IMDB but now it's filled with a bunch of movie snobs who honestly believe any film which isn't called "The Godfather" is automatically a bad film and God forbid if another film dares to have a higher rating than "The Godfather" on that site!

Seriously it's gotten so bad, the various Films/TV Series which I know previously had ratings of 7 - 8 are now below 6! Not "The Godfather", therefore they MUST be bad(!)

Then again maybe it's become a positive place again who knows? Haven't visited it for some time now due to the reasons above.

That way you cut out tonnes of ambitious, challenging and provocative films, you sacrifice personal discrimination and have your viewing choices dictated to you by people that voted The Dark Knight and The Shawshank Redemption as two of the greatest films ever made. Well done you!

If you're a music fan, might I recommend to you the works of One Direction, this century's most popular band!

Agree with others, you're missing out on great films, examples of films i thought wasn't worthy of the IMDb scores above 6.5 which i have watched recently:

Crank (2006) IMDb score 7.0, my score 2.0
A Clockwork Orange (1971) IMDb score 8.4, my score 3.0
Godfather Part 3 (1990) IMDb score 7.6, my score 5.0 - Not a patch on the first two.
Gravity (2013) IMDb score 7.9, my score 6.0

Scores below 6.5 which I have watched recently:

The Specialist (1994) IMDb score 5.4, My score 7.0
Showgirls (1995) IMDb score 4.5, my score 7.0
Body Of Evidence (1993) IMDb score 4.3, my score 6.0
Eraser (1996) IMDB score 6.0, my score 7.0
Taking of Pelham 123 (2009) IMDb score 6.4, my score 7.0

Just some examples, its down to personal preference and not website ratings, the ratings can sometimes reflect the film will be bad when its actually good.

    Very true.

Personally I thought "Epic Movie" was one of the worse films I had ever seen but my sister, who was watching it with me, thought it was bloody hilarious!

Also I personally really loved "The Fisher King" to bits but my sister HATED it and thought it was one of the worse films she had ever seen!

This alone is proof enough of how subjective films really are and why, when it really comes down to it, no "high/low' ratings nor popular opinion can ever truly dictate what any of us will like or dislike within our own personal tastes. :)

Ratings can change there tho, Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me was mid sixes for a long time but is now 7.2 I notice.

Wouldn't work for me, there are tons of overrated shit movies on IMDB just as there are a lot of underrated gems.
