I have just placed an advert, as I have a place in my life for a settled doggy, breed irrelevant. Am not experienced with dogs,, but will make sure that any possibility isnt destructive, has its jabs, find out how much training it has, is it destructive or noisy on its own? What else should I ask??
Best to go to a rescue and get one that has been temperament assessed in a foster home. they will also be able to give you ongoing support and advice.:)

You will need to see proof from the vet to show its jabs are upto date. I would also spend some time (hours) with the dog at the owners house. Take it for a walk and see how it behaves. Be prepared to do this more than once. You have a much better chance of getting a dog without problems this way rather than a resue centre where you can get swept along with all the sad stories. There is usually a very good reason why the dogs are in there in the first place.

Sorry finbaar but I think that is poor advice.
Any reputable rescue will want the placement to work. They will try to match dog to owner and provide back up. If the adoption does fail, they will take the dog back. They will be honest about behavioural issues and will help with them. The dog will be jabbed and neutered. Many dogs in rescue are there because their owners have split up and/or moved into rented accomodation, or have lost their job and can't afford the dog or conversly increased their work hours so can't give the dog enough time.
There are sob stories on gumtree too, and dogs with issues. And owners trying to get shot of them. The difference being, the owner on gum tree likely won't be in a posistion to take back the dog if something goes wrong - be it tommorow or in a year. Unlike rescue.
I am still keeping my out on Gumtree for my gorgeous kitty and found this advert...this is by far the worst I have seen!!!
"i have a 9 yr old rotty free to good home due to house move , perfect with kids my two sons 10 and 4 have been brought up with him , totally daft as a brush not a bad bone in his body ,if this option on here fails hes gonna have to be put to sleep wich seems a shame as he is in perfectly good health."

That will be nice for the kids. We can't take Rover with us so I'm going to kill him.
