The governments of Australia and New Zealand have passed parliamentary motions to mourn the passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

Motion by Mr Abbott, Prime Minister of Australia:

"I move, that the House record its deep regret at the death of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, former Prime Minister of Singapore, and place on record its acknowledgement of his role as the founding father of modern Singapore and tender its profound sympathy to his family in their bereavement.

"Mr Lee did not just lead his country; he also made his country. It is one of the most remarkable economic success stories in history. Within a generation, Singapore has moved from the Third World to the First World. "One statistic tells the story of modern Singapore. In 1965, the nation’s gross domestic product per head was about one-third that of Australia. Today, Singapore’s GDP per head is almost double that of Australia.

"Today, we mourn Mr Lee’s passing but, forever, we will celebrate the life of this great nation builder and leader of our time. I acknowledge the presence today of the Singapore High Commissioner and hope he will pass on to his government and country the condolences of the people and parliament of Australia."

India's government has declared a day of national mourning on Sunday (Mar 29) as a mark of respect for Singapore's founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. According to a statement on India's Ministry of Home Affairs website, the national flag of India will be flown at half-mast throughout the country, and there will be no official entertainment.

Prime Minister Modi earlier paid tribute to Mr Lee as "a lion among leaders".

United States President Barack Obama announced a Presidential Delegation to participate in the State Funeral. Leading the delegation is former United States President Bill Clinton, and former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, who was a close friend of Mr Lee, will also make the trip.

President Barack Obama:
“Lee’s views and insights on Asian dynamics and economic management were respected by many around the world, and no small number of this and past generations of world leaders have sought his advice on governance and development.” “He was a true giant of history who will be remembered for generations to come as the father of modern Singapore and as one of the great strategists of Asian affairs.”
