Don't know about you lot but I get a lot of customers older than me addressing me as Young man, sir or a scholar (this is usually after getting something from round the back that isn't very hard to get hold of). I don't see this as patronising, more as a means of respect from the said customer.

As I'm six feet two I get asked by little old ladies in supermarkets to reach for things on the top shelves, It's always "Excuse me, young man" (Don't feel so young at 37)
