    If you believe a ÷ bc is a ÷ ( b * c) then the answer is 2
    If you believe a ÷ bc is a ÷ b * c then the answer is 288

and if you know rather than beleive that it is ambiguous then there is no answer.

I don't really think it takes 17 pages which people won't read, to work out BIDMAS. It's not an argument. The fact lies on the second page.

Most people say 288 because it is 288.

Most people say 288 presumably because they think it is, not that it actually is.

It's 288. So far, 156 people are WRONG. As you were people

So someone who can't admit they are wrong would say.

:D most people on the poll said 2. A good 10% more.

You didn't consider that this question was spread to more than 300 odd people on DigitalSpy did you?

I can't make "sence" at all. You're a part of the minority who can make "sence". :o

No I didn't vote. The poll didn't offer the option of saying that the expression was not "well defined",

I bow to your knowledge that you have that isn't displayed here.

    You're wrong :p

My argument is, I believe, clear enough.

Care to show me where I am wrong?

I have an iphone app called pi cubed - that also indicates the answer is 288.

Based on my mathematical knowledge - you work the calculation out as:

    48/2(9+3) = 48/2 * (9+3)
    48/2 * (9+3) = 48/2 * 12
    48/2 * 12 = 24 * 12
    24 * 12 = 288

Is that a dig at my spelling? If so. stick arround. I am dyspraxic and you will find many more examples to pick at.

    Good.

Just as well since the internet is a huge resource and it could take hours upon hours to gain information on something so basic, and at the same time, a very short space of time to implement BIDMAS to an equation.

"No, 287 people are 'wrong'..... " is not an argument, clear or otherwise *snaps fingers and flicks hair*

    What 'equation'?

No, but the several posts I made prior to the comment detail an argument which backs up my assertion.

Is it really that hard to figure out what I'm referring to? I thought the opening post addressed it as such, so to keep on the same topic, I used the same terminology. My apologies for not simplifying further or using a more accurate description.

289 people are wrong because the correct answer is that there isn't one. You cannot solve an ambiguos problem.

    No you wouldn't....

    You get:

    48 ÷ (18 + 6) = 48 ÷ 24 = 2

No if I have 2(a +b) and multiply out the bracket I get
    2a +2b

If I had 2(9 + b) and multiply out the bracket I get
    18 + 2b

You are assuming because there is ÷ operand before it that I have to solve it in other words you assume that

    ÷ 2(9+3) is actually ÷ ( 2 (9+3)) ie 24
    and if so then
    48 ÷ 2(9+3) must be 2
