    Forget it.

My contribution was pretty much what was said above.

I imagine it's very difficult for someone with no arms or legs to re-offend ;) What are they going to do? Wheel chair you to death?

They could STARE you to death like this: :eek::eek::eek:

    Then what?

Then your imagination is clearly lacking. I can think of loads of ways.

If they've been put to death then clearly it didn't deter them from doing whatever it was they were hanged for.

yes it did - they couldn't do it again

I’m more inclined to send them to prison.

However, it would be a different prison system to the one we have which is no deterrent. Prisoners would be in solitary confinement with only a bed, a toilet and a wet room type shower. All meals would be some gruel with supplements for dietary needs. Drink would be only water. No socialising. No outside areas. No visitors. No post. Only books for entertainment – no TV.

I think this would be a deterrent and would also wipe out drug dealing in prisons.

They point of a deterrent is to, well, deter people from doing it in the first place.

Isn't the best deterrent teaching people things that will enable them to get what they want legally? (This does not include force-feeding them at school with nonsense about past battles of long dead kings or anything else that won't help them get a start in life.)

Put it this way then. If those three scum that got life yesterday had gone to the gallows, Would it deter other scum of their ilk? I think yes.

Think some of the contributions on here are quite insensitive to amputees, of which I'm sure there are a few on DS

And yet in countries where the death penalty is available, such crimes still happen. I'm not convinced it does work as a deterrent. I'm not sure any sentence does, as I don't think people in these situations consider the consequences of their actions, either for the victim or for themselves.

and what better deterrant = if you kill people you die and your life is gone.

Fair comment, although we have no way of knowing if these crimes happen to a lesser or greater degree than if there were no death penalty. So we do not know to what extent the deterrent works.

I don't know about the punishment fitting the crime - but - if anyone takes my fresh cream apple turnover I'm chopping their fingers off! LOL

If it was a deterrant there would be no murders in countries that have the death penalty.

That's not really true. It's not enough to have a death penalty, you also have to have a capable police force and judiciary system competent enough to detect crime, identify the offenders and bring them to justice.

Having one without the other is not going to deter people.

Definately castration for rapists and paedophiles. Also bring back the Short Sharp Shock for thugs with no pathetic do-gooders being allowed to interfere. As for sentencing, life should mean life as it does in the USA.

Amputation of the head would be the ticket for such scum.
