Overall about one in four MPs receives income from rental properties.

And so do 153 other politicians so why pick Andy Burnham out for special attention ?

Maybe the question should be why since 2010 there has been an increase in MP's
( including the PM) renting out properties.

This whole thing is corruption, nothing less.

It might seem innocent because the MPs are not "working" for a housing firm. But in fact they are, the "housing firm" being their own portfolio.

And the news media are not tearing into all this because the news media are corrupt as well.

I think that the taxpayers should have held on to all of the properties we bought for M.P.s up and down the country. They should have been let out to M.P.s for rent and we should still own them. Balls and wife have three between them.

It's outrageous that homes that we paid for are being rented out by people who got them for nothing.

    They are all at it.

"COALITION minister Esther McVey misled Commons expenses chiefs before enthusiastically demanding toughened sanctions on benefit claimants.

Esther McVey has claimed various sums reaching up to £1,830 a month since 2010 for rent, listed two non-existent companies as landlords at the London property she shares with fellow Tory claimant Philip Davies.

When questioned by a constituent about her property arrangements in 2012, the minister said her landlords were Glover Industries Ltd and Baystar Ventures Ltd.

Ms McVey said she had requested that the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority change their database of MPs’ landlords to match this, from other information she said was incorrect.

But investigation can reveal that neither Glover Industries Ltd nor Baystar Ventures Ltd existed at the time the letter was penned.

Companies House documents show that dissolved company Glover Industries last filed accounts or a members list in 2001 — nine years before Ms McVey started claiming for her second home."

    If "someone"?

Are you being serious? These are law-makers who get to manipulation the situation to ensure their own wealth.

    It's corruption.

I think maybe some people are confused here, thinking it's an expenses thing.

It possibly is as well, but many it's about housing. It's about availability, the insecurity of renting, the amazing cost of renting and so forth.

For example; The Conservatives are promising to, essentially, destroy Housing Associations (HA). The result being ever increasing rents for everyone, HA or private.

Here there's a lot of vested interests at work. MPs are basically mostly property speculators and landlords, so why would they want to do anything like force more houses to be built to alleviate the crisis, or to strengthen and enforce tenants' rights?

And the whole outrageousness of the taxpayer and parliamentary allowances that help them to build that little "nest egg"

If the conflict of interest was in something more 'normal' like a shareholding in a company or industry then you'd expect it to be worked around, but with property it seems to be fair game

Fine - as long as they pay back every penny of expenses we paid them to fund the mortgage to buy that property out of the rental income or sales proceeds. In the 2005 parliament you could claim up to £22000 a year in mortgage interest on a second home - outrageous!

As another example of this, Charles Kennedy claims more than £20k for rent, but also has registered that he has a flat in London which he rents out. Why doesn't he live in his own flat which was probably paid for by us (he refuses to answer questions on the subject)?
