Just seen a web page (wirralradio.co.uk) announcing (yet) another local station for the Wirral. We already have 2, can The Wirral sustain another?

Does anyone have any info on this? Frequencies, area of transmission...?

Is it the station that comes from the YMCA in Birkenhead?

Putting that frequency in looks like a relaunch of 7Waves? You'd know more about the background to all that than I do.

Presumably it's a relaunch of 7 Waves as 92.1 is their frequency. The Wirralradio pages says DAB so maybe they're going on the Liverpool or NE Wales MUX?

16th June is the relaunch date. They need the DAB really as the coverage on 92.1 is very poor being in between two radio 3 frequencies.

Cheers for the replies. Odd that 7 Waves is relaunching. Hopefully they'll change their target audience as I feel it's skewed too young. I'll tune in with anticipation on the 14th!

So we still have only two stations

92.1 7 Waves - seemingly changing to Wirral Radio
97.1 Capital Wirral - copy of Capital WRexham - sourced from London with Wrexham based breakfast and drive show. Adverts always localised.

So we really only have one station -

(oh and there is two hospital stations

    1386 kHz: Radio Clatterbridge

    and Arrowe Sound

I forgot about Clatterbridge! Jimbo. I was talking about Flame on AM. Radio Clatterbridge gets out well. Are there any plans to put Arrowe Sound on AM?

This looks like good news. The people in charge at 7 Waves have never known how to play the local card properly (aside from shout outs and worthy but dull interviews). The presentation has also been patchy. From what I hear on the grapevine the new team have some good plans to make it a real voice for the area. Good luck to John and Neil and co.

Oh, a totally new team? Thought it was just a rebrand. I'm even more keen to tune in!

Not quite. They are largely shuffling the pack - and it's long overdue, IMO.

I'm hoping the music will be skewed older and the presenters will be professional. If not the case, it'll be straight back to my regular choices.

I was told by a presenter that some of the line up will be changing, Geoff Morris from drive time will be leaving Craig Harrison is taking over and rumours are that Kev Seed will be hosting the breakfast show.

Any news on the music policy? Katy Perry, Coldplay and Westlife will be an instant switch off.

Dont know much more sorry all i know is that nothing is logged with ofcom regarding a change in licence, key commitments or application for dab so I dont know what to believe. In all lets hope its better than 7 waves was they have a great facility but is under used, badly managed and has a bad reputation that is damaging the brand.

I've seen the 7Waves schedule and it looked dire there is nothing on there that would make me want to listen. Showed it to a mate of mine and even he was a bit miffed as to why they don't have a wider range of programmes.

I still think that Wirral Radio should open themselves up and go down the syndication route for a few programmes as I've noticed that the stations that do seem to recieve more listeners in the way of oh so and so is on the station lets tune in.

I think it will be a bit older, music wise. Certainly the days of presenters choosing the music seem to be over, which will help it sound more cohesive. There is a real opportunity now to deliver a decent radio station for the area, providing it is marketed properly. The key is to make sure they reflect their patch in everything they do, which is something the 7 Waves bods have never had the skills or know how to achieve, in my view.

They need to promote it. I've only seen them out once in Birkenhead, three years ago. No one I know listens to it, most of them didn't know it existed until I've brought it up. They need to have people out and about, promoting and doing Vox Pops etc., getting Wirral to notice their existence. Being on DAB will help too, reception has been poor over the last two years or so.

I was flicking through last night and I heard a promo for Wirral Radio on 7 Waves using the old Real/Century Bespoke Jingles which would fit well tbh with singing "Wirral Radio".

Also this has been posted on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SznOZYqoTa4 to be fair all sounds good.

Yikes. It's the love child of Dale Winton and Cilla Black.

    Noticed

Community radio station 7Waves is planning a relaunch next week in a bid to reach the entire Wirral peninsula.

The station currently covers a small area to the west of Birkenhead on FM – Leasowe and surrounding area of the Wirral. But with the additional DAB coverage the not for profit station is aiming to reach 1.8m people – the same as Radio City’s TSA.

The station will be known as Wirral Radio from 8am on June 16th, and remains at its base at Wirral Media Centre in Leasowe.

They're on DAB, testing on the new Welsh MUX, which is by far the best for us! I wish Magic would switch! Look for "TEST", it's at 64k.

Weird actually, but I am home in North Shropshire now, well within reach of the Moel-Y-Parc DAB transmitter, yet "Test" won't appear on my Pure Evoke Flow. I did a retune and it registers that a new radio station is there but it won't tune in to it

EDIT: Factory re-set did the trick! :D

Listening to the test broadcast and it is actually quite hard for me to fathom who their music policy is aimed at? To me it is all over the place.
