A question about Lucy Beale's death...

Why wasn't Ian at the restaurant the night of Lucy's death? (my viewing has been pretty patchy). Other than Cindy mentioning to him that she knew and wouldn't say anything has this been addressed or is this meant to throw Ian in the ring as another potential suspect?

    This has confused me a tad, could he have not told the police in confidence that he was
    with Ben
    if he was?

    I know that would mean there would be no shock story but, just a thought.:confused::D
