Muslims are clearly not seen in the same category as black people, ie attacking them is not considered racist. A lot of the online discussion shades from anti-Isis rants into a kind of generalized torture-porn, with the distinction between Isis and all Muslims getting weaker and weaker. Facebook have been alerted countless times to the worst examples, but never do anything.
Yes, I guess when a society starts to become hostile to a minority group then less is done to stop any abuse of that group.

I think IT is still seen as boys own stuff by many men. All the modern tech icons like Gates, Jobs, Zuckerberg and Elon Musk are men. Yes there are powerful women in tech but few if any really are seen big time creators of important services. Sheryl Sandberg did bring advertising to Google search but most people wouldn't even rate that as significant. So there's probably low expectation of women from many in the tech sector and you can imagine a phrase like "what she ever going to do?" being said. I could be wrong but I know what geeky tech boys can be like when they get together. So it doesn't surprise me. You need an HR department ruling things with a rod of iron so the normalcy of sexism in the office is reduced which might change some people's attitudes.
I think some of the reasons why women don't pursue careers in IT could be put down to sexual dimorphism:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_computing#Factors_contributing_to_lack_of_female_participation

There is always room for improvement but if women see computing in a different way to men (in the same way the majority of men and women play video games differently for the same reasons), as with claims around the gender pay gap, you can only go so far until the laws of biology and psychology become major barriers to a 50/50 balance.

Sometimes I despair at some of the things I see on FB. Not my own page I hasten to add, as anyone posting this crap on mine would be gone!

It really makes me sad How FB seems to moderate its own site.
How can the things in the article be allowed to stay on FB and not be violating any of FB terms

How do you feel about this type of thing?

It's truly depressing & somewhat scary to see just how many males absolutely hate females :(

I also think it's high time sexism & misogyny were treated the same as racism & homophobia on here. There's a (thankfully small) coterie of misogynists who seem to be given free rein on this forum.

I don't disagree with you about sexism & misogyny needing to be tackled on here, but surely misandry does too - after all, this forum is riddled with it! Merely because it's often dressed up as "feminism" doesn't make it okay...

It really isn't, or if it is I'm reading the wrong threads. I've never been made to feel uncomfortable because of my gender on here, at any rate.

Fair enough if that's your experience - it's certainly not mine.

Do you have any examples? If my gender's being oppressed then I'd like to know.

Ive not seen it to be honest ( but I am female so maybe I miss it) I have seen a lot of misogyny on DS and its normally by the same members who always post about the misandry on here.

One of them at the moment really grinds my gears.

I think some men equate us complaining about misogyny etc as misandry. Maybe in some cases it hits a little too close to home.

It's the same reasons why otherwise sane people decide that beheading people is a good career move or why kids stealvthongs from shops - peer pressure

I have to ask the question - why do males pressure their peers into being misogynist dicks?

So all men are misogynistic? :P

You see, one tiny imperfection in your wording and you are claiming something I suspect you never intended. Thats the way of the internet, every single post can be ripped apart and inspected by anyone, anyone at all.

Best bet for these types of groups and websites is to just ignore them. I know it sounds dated, but a website or group lives on its popularity, once that is removed it dies away.

As to why discrimination continues, well people are inherently stupid. I do not think its a stretch that the dumber a person is, the more likely they are to hold bigoted views (on any group). Its a aspect of stupidity that continues to this day and I suspect will continue until we are all robots or eaten by the Martians. Either way, its here to stay sadly.

Ah yes, Sheryl Sandberg. One of the faces of the campaigns to ban the word "bossy".

    Yes, ban a word.

That's all hate speech and criminal activity - I'd suggest the remit to tackle that should lie with the Government and the Police.

I don't think that works as an argument. First of all, I have never heard of any campaign called 'ban bossy'; I'm not disputing that it might have existed, but the fact that I never saw it, in spite of both my facebook and twitter timelines being pretty feminist in outlook suggests that it wasn't a big cultural phenomenon. Secondly, it was surely no worse than misguided, and has no place in a discussion about rape threats and torture fantasies. And third, it just doesn't work to say that rape and torture threats and fantasies are 'hate speech' and should be addressed by the government and police. They simply aren't. There have been a TINY number of cases to address and almost incalculable number of posts.

This is genuinely the first youtube page I looked at, deliberately avoiding very contentious people like Kate McCann. I typed the word 'Yasmin Alibhai Brown' in to see what people make of her thoughtful if sometimes controversial, extremely mainstream broadcasts. This concerns nothing more than a liberal-left journalist, very much against Islamic extremism and generally saying nothing that might frighten the horses.

    shes a fat ugly **** [racist p-word]

our gene pool will be destroyed unless we do something about it, as were being out bred By 8.5 by recent immigrant to our 1.6 white british, this is genocide of our race, the lefty **** [c-word]

    Typical muslim retard

In my area of work I have the joy of making shit like experience misery on a far higher scale than you could ever imagine you by your comments have just caused a lot more for them ENJOY !!

    ****.off.****.lover. [f-word, racist p-word]

Is there anyone on this planet that is more worthless than this disgusting, hideous oxygen thief Yasmin Alibhai Brown.

punching YAB in the throat would be letting her off lightly, i'd prefer to gouge her eyes out with a stanley knife

    shes actually a "**** ****" [racist p-word, c-word]

put the juice in the ovens.

    Hideous racist ****.

    ....****ing ****!!

Phew, what a conundrum, which **** to theoretically shoot first?? [c-word, referring to YAB and the female interviewer]

Fabricant was right about her needing a punch in the throat. I hate this woman with a passion.

I would boot Yasmin alibhai brown right in the fallopian tube if i got half a chance! ****ing ****!.
    [f-word, c-word]

I would kill her if I ever had the chance. What a disgusting human being.

These are comments under a single video, in which she debates Britishness with Rod Liddle. I could find a worse collection, easily, but I have played fair and only taken comments under the first, not very contentious, video I looked at. And youtube are doing precisely nothing to stop people saying they want to gouge out her eyes with a Stanley knife and boot her in the fallopian tube.

100% agree. Sometimes using terms like 'equalist' as a distraction but they are very pretty obvious.

Typically condescending, but nope, it's nothing that subtle. It is posts like this:

As crass as it's sexist. :(

How about this, just a few posts away from this one:

Also, practically any thread on sex crimes or sexuality in general.

Another well-worn tactic is to complain loudly and often about sexism and misogyny to distract from one's own sexism and misandry.

Of course, any mere man who has the temerity to question or challenge such behaviour is rather conveniently labelled a "misogynist", ironically.

But isnt that reply, in a reply to someone saying men do it because of peer pressure. A silly post will get a silly reply.

Sorry if I have that wrong but that is how I read it.

    Sorry, that's such a cop-out.

It means that anyone can post any old pernicious cr*p they like, and if challenged reply with: "Well, a silly post deserves a silly reply"!

But it WAS in reply to someone saying that! She even quoted the thing she was replying to!

I'm really not feeling the discomfort here.

You're gonna have to show me. I'm pretty sure the amount of anti-men comments, if any, will be more than balanced by the ****-shaming posts. Hardly evidence that the place is riddled with misandry.
