depends on the airline, Ryanair never ask me for a passport but Easyjet insist on one.
I never use a passport to fly on Easyjet within the UK - always driving licence. They certainly don't insist on a passport.
BMI often didn't ask for ID on Belfast-Heathrow flights (though ID was always required for Heathrow-Belfast), wonder if BA do the same now they've taken over the route...
