OP - you sure about Mike Smith....? Don't remember him doing it at all.
Yes he had Alan Freeman on and they were chatting about Capital Radio.
Funnily enough i don't recall Jameson, though he was *everywhere* back then.
Good call with Kenneth Williams, I remember now.
I can never remember if Wogan was off during the summer or whether it continued all year round with guest hosts. Like his breakfast show, TW sure did have a lot of holidays

I think the guest stints were scattered throughout the year, because I can remember Sue Lawley doing it on the night after they'd had the storms in October 1987. She made a quip that the scene outside was "like one of those old adverts for Freeman Hardy and Willis - branches everywhere." Har-har. Funny the things you remember!
I remember Frank Skinner standing in and holding his own. He seemed to come out of nowhere bar being interviewed on Wogan previously himself?
I don't think he guest hosted the early evening show - though he had a regular sidekick role on Terry Wogan's Friday Night in 1993, which only ran for one series. You may be thinking of that.

That must have been it.
There is an interesting section in his book about his question to Cliff Richard being excised from that show. He cornered Cliff on a quote he had made about him not being in favour of women priests whilst a nun was also on the guestlist.
The question was cut from the aired version with edits of Cliff nodding agreement with the nun inserted instead!

Only thing, can't quite remember who it was with
Didn't he do it with Moira Stuart?
Seem to remember something called 'Happy News at 7'?

Selina Scott had a mare of an interview with Bryan Adams. Wondering why he didn't spend his new found wealth on more ostentatious cars and clothes!

Wow did he really? I recall he was on TV-AM around then?
That must have been it.

Don't believe everything you see on tv.
I seem to recall that Felicity was a disaster on it.
Yeah, she took the micky cos he had a Land Rover.. he just rode the tackle and said land rovers are great cars. Good on him
And they decided that should be the week to put Bernard Manning on.
Clive ripped the shizzle out of him.
I remember Ben Elton. He was very nervy and it made for uncomfortable viewing.
Mike Smith covered in 1987. A clip of him here:

Found Ben Elton interviewing Stephen Fry and Eurythmics on Wogan:

I wonder why they thought Ben Elton - a supposedly radical left-wing stand-up back then - would make a good middle of the road chat show host?
