How come Smooth Radio London is only broadcast across the country on Freeview or ( Sky? in Brackets as I've only heard on Freeview :) )

Was this why all the top broadcasters were given there shows on the London Network and everyone is able to hear them across the UK?

Taking about this I think Lynn P and Martin C shows should be networked now across the UK, just like Marks does ;)

Give it a few more months and you never know.

Technically, yes, Lynn Parsons' show could be networked, but I really don't think Martin Collins show would be, because as he does drivetime, you need the regional content in there so I don't really think that would be a good idea.

It sounds like Mike Allen will be networked soon though. I'm sure that's a good move for GMG, he does a great show and is extremely accomplished.

Yeah, Mike Allen would sound good networked! He is a great presenter and going for so many years too! He is one presenter who's show I would network if I could!

Such a shame that we are discussing networking yet more "local" commercial stations.

I can understand networking daytimes 10am-4pm and evenings but please keep Breakfast & Drive local.

Martin's sunday programme could well be, and wouldnt mind betting Fiona Phillips will be shortly as well.

Yeah, his Sunday show could be networked - I was just having a 'senior moment' and forgot comepletly that MC does Sunday Mornings when I did that post!:D As for Fiona Philips, I wouldn't give her the time of day.

Don't worry, breakfast & drive HAVE to be local, it's an OFCOM thing!

Yeah, that is the rule from OFCOM. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I knew drive wouldn't be networked as there has to be travel reports and local features in there and also breakfast - there is no need to do that either! So yes Andy - you're right!:D

    Hey radiogirl,

    Nice to see you again!

I was replying to 'FM Lover' who seemed to be worried that drive would be networked.

Now as Smooth isn't obliged to play 20% tracks that are at least 40 years old it's sounding loads better without the obscure/dire 60s stuff. However the music is still all over the place at times.

Listening to Smooth NW at around 11pm a few weeks ago, I heard about 20 minutes of nice mellow tracks followed by an upbeat, country sounding track which completely ruined the mood that the other tracks had created.

The playlist still needs some tweaks to avoid things like this happening.

Ah, I didn't realise that they had had a format alteration, but it makes sense now that you've told me! I do think the music selection has improved recently.

I would imagine that if you run a big database of songs that smooth must be running you will get the odd swing of musical style from one track to the other, at least smooth are not playing the same 200 tracks over and over again and they seem to allow the jocks a bit of freedom with the database .Listening to Tony's show this week it was clear that they were programming some funky soul tracks for him and he responded by sounding great on air .I also notice that Mike Allen at night plays some great 70's and 80's stuff that you never hear anywhere else ,recently I heard Poco and Rose of Cimaron and Mandolin Rain by Bruce Hornsby...you wouldn't get these on Magic or Heart . I'm all for the odd musical train wreck if it means less repetition

Ah yes, I heard 'Mandolin Rain' earlier today on Lynn Parsons' show, I was in the car and the sun was shining. I had the window down and the volume up, what a great feeling!

No it is not a crazy and pointles posting .That is the kind of music that smooth london 102.2 did play and should be playing under its former name of jazz fm.Golden rose knew how to run a radio station gmg do not.Jazz fm 102.2 born 3rd march 1990 (R I P BY GMG 2004) .From simon astrop

Didn't they have a problem finding an audience and making a profit, arguably due to the music played and the format?

I suppose Drive time couldn't be networked. Smooth Midlands have Nigel Williams doing the show. ( Is that live from London on a loop? ) I suppose it be too much trying to get all the local stuff feed over too one show? Also you would need to break up the travel parts and commercials.

I guess Smooth Radio is beating Radio 2 in the ratings especially the London network?

Gavin McCoy has done a brilliant job. :)

    dont talk so much rubbish!

gmg are one of the finest operators in uk radio - jazz never made money and to be honest it was a stupid idea having local specialist stations, now a national fm jazz station may work, as would a national country, soul etc.

Have you ever seen the listening figures for Smooth Radio London?

They've hardly attracted many people away from Heart or Magic but admittedly those who do listen listen longer.

As for doing a 'brilliant job' whenever I've landed on 102.2 it's always an 80s-90s pop song that is of the 'tried & tested' variety :(

Smooth is no better or no worse than Heart or Magic; pretty standard stuff and just as scripted!

I wonder how much GMG have spent on Smooth Radio in London over the last few years and how much they've made in return?

In London they seem to rely heavily on NHS ads and plugging their own dating service in the evenings!

I'm afraid to say when i tune into any Smooth station it doesn't seem to be long before i hear Leona Lewis or some disco hit you hear everywhere else.True Smooth do play some different songs but as an alternative like Saga was-well it just isn't. They would never have played some of the tracks Smooth feature.Pity London never got to try that brand on FM.Admittedly they did need to trim the 40's and 50's music but not what GMG have done to it!.An easy listening station with variety is no more.More of the same old songs that are cluttering up the Fm waveband i'm afraid.

Smooth is mostly 60's and 70's when I've listened, last ten songs on the networked Mark Goodier show:

    Aerosmith, I Don't Want To Miss A Thing (90's)
    O'jays, I Love Music (70's)
    Bee Gees, Massachusetts (60's)
England Dan, Love Is The Answer (70's)
    Roy Orbison, Crying (60's)
    B 52's, Love Shack (80's)
Neil Diamond, Love On The Rocks (80's)
10cc, The Things We Do For Love (70's)
    Badfinger, No Matter What (70's)
Spencer Davis Group, Gimme Some Loving (60's)
