Having read all eight books, I can say that about half of the first book is about putting the pieces in place and then the pace gets going as the story really begins. The series seems to be reflecting this well, from the little I have seen online so far. It is a multidimensional story, not a historical romance.

Another "putting the pieces in place" episode this week. Thought Tim McInnerny was proper menacing though!

Just watching the first episode.. so slow.

Looks nice, guess this isn't going to be Highlander.

    Patience running out
There is slow and then there is so slow that nothing happens. Outlander does the latter.

God it's Fifty Shades Of Tartan, Twilight for grown ups. Got the impression it was sci-fi, what's the point of the time travel otherwise, might as well just be a drama at this rate.
Nothing to look forward to but her humping a dishy Highlander, meh. Where's Connor MacLeod when you need him.

interesting sound track this week. Can someone who's read the books tell me if the 40's music is in Claire's head or does it represent the two worlds getting closer together?

I haven't read the books, but it seemed clear to me that the music in the show was meant to represent that Claire still has one foot in the 1940's.

    hi MT,

what do you think of it so far? I think it's got some shortcomings (the lead actress doesn't do her voiceover in the most convincing way) but I don't mind the slow pace, so I'm sticking with it for now.

But, the big question is, will it get to adapt all the books (so, what, at least 8 series?)

Well, I liked episode 4 a bit less than the first three, but I doubt that is the beginning of a trend. I have heard episode 6 is smashing. I am very positive about this show, and look forward to it during the week, which isn't necessarily something I do for specific shows even when I am extremely high on them (for some reason).

I do wonder about the future of the show long term. It is not just that there are eight books in the series. The author has no intention of stopping at eight. I think at a certain point they are simply going to end things, with much of the story untranslated to screen.

I definitely think the music was in Claire's head, just as we all sometimes get music stuck in our head as we go about our daily lives. She's a woman of the 1940's, so of course that's the music that she's most likely to be humming as she goes about plotting her escape from the castle. Note none of this music appears around or is associated with any other character in the 1740's.

As for other comments I've read here, this story is not science fiction or even totally fantasy or totally fiction as some of the other shows/books people are comparing this with are. It's more a hybrid of historical fiction with a dash of fantasy. Other than the very important time travel aspect and all the rules and limitations of that travel, these fictional characters are reacting to real historical events and, sometimes with real historical figures. They've been involved in WWII or in the Scottish rebellion against the English ... as well as other events in history, which of course, makes Claire's fore knowledge part of the story too, let alone her advance medical knowledge.

Starz don't really have much else that captures the femifap market do they? It's pulling in significant numbers for them, and attracting a reasonable proportion of men as well. I think it would take a significant drop for it to be binned

I'd also suspect that the later books
    American plotlines
may strengthen it's appeal to Starz audience

I think you are misunderstanding me. I am not suggesting the show's popularity will taper off and bad ratings will doom the show. It is more a matter of costs increasing over time and actors' contracts running out, to the point that it just becomes impractical (outside of rare exceptions) to keep a US series going past a certain number of years -- a number of years smaller than the number of books there will apparently be.

Aah! Starting to get interesting! The age old scifi time travel question rears its head at last:

"if you could change the past, should you try?"

Ah right with you now. Maybe they'd be better off taking it to a longer running series and covering a couple of books per 22 episode series rather than one per 10 or 12 ep series.

That said I'm not sure how the rules work contract wise and if that would just mean the actors getting a bump in pay sooner?

Is this US pace, is it even shown in the UK?

Anyhow the latest episode was rather good, can't fault the production values, splendid.

I'm really loving this series. I had no idea this show even existed until I saw this thread. Having never read the books, I'm wondering if I should read it now or after series one has completed.

The latest episode is my favourite to date and that cliffhanger left me wanting more. I just wish I could understand Gaelic thoroughly instead of just understanding the gist of it. Yet I do like the feeling of me being disconnected as Claire is.

If you understand the gist of the Gaelic, am I right to think that you are Scottish?

I assumed they got the gist from body language and context of the situation.

It is ambiguous, which is another reason I asked for clarification. The person specifically used the word Gaelic, but they could have MEANT "got the gist of what they wanted to communicate," which would bring in things like body language and context, as you say.

    Anyone else reminded of "Shogun"?

I wish I knew it was going to be porny before I watched it with my mum :blush::D

When I first read that there was going to be an "Outlander" series, I was hoping it was going to be based on "Outlander" the movie, the one with James Caviezel and Sophia Myles:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outlander_%28film%29

I really love that movie :)
